An incidental piece of information: the conductor on this November 1926 record is none other than Georg Szell, then a Berlin Kapellmeister, later the celebrated conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra

Tauber had returned to Dresden for a guest Fledermaus on 30 June 1926 when he was asked in the interval if he could learn the part for the German premiere on 4 July, as Curt Taucher, due to sing Calaf, had taken sick. Tauber, who was due to leave Dresden next day, duly learnt and sang it at the German premiere and repeated the role 2 days later, to great acclaim. He later sang Calaf in Vienna and elsewhere.

Fell in love with Taubers voice when i was 17 years old. About 1960. A stack of old 48's at the Childrens home where i worked. I think they were made from Bakelite. Before the invention of plastic anyway. We played them on a wind-up record player.
