Rich Mullins - "Maker of Noses"

I am surprised this song, or even this album, isn't available on YouTube. This song rocks. For a song made in 1992, it's beautiful.

I grew up listening to Rich Mullins. I was born in 1991, so the album has been with me as I grew.

God bless you all.

Interesting comments below. And of course, Rich is telling us that following our hearts will only lead us into our own chest, and that our dreams are only misty notions. It's the Father of hearts and the Giver of dreams whom we must follow, not Self. And in response to a comment below, it's useless to speculate why someone died at age 43. God could have taken my life many, many times, for doing things a lot worse than delving into Catholic Monasticism (Kid Brothers of St. Frank and all that.) God is the Giver of Life and He gives and takes at his pleasure, and we will 99% of the time never know why He did what He did. Rich, in my opinion, is the greatest contemporary song writer...I can't think of anyone who has come close. "Maker of Noses" is one of my favorites, just behind "Calling Out Your Name" , If I Stand" and "Here in America." (And if you start listing his great songs, you can go 15 or 20 deep without even pausing, like Sometimes By Step, Screen Door, Boy LIke me, Man like You, Jacob and Two Women, Creed, Hold Me Jesus, Awesome God, etc.) His second volume of greatest hits (Songs Vol II) could be the best compilation ever made, except that Volume I is even better!

Still love this song. I've heard it probably hundreds of times but it hasn't lost any of it's meaning to me.

+Murl Center Come on brother! I feel prompty to share you this and tell you: LISTEN to the lyrics!: Rich is not telling you to follow your heart! he's not telling you to follow your dreams! he's telling you just the opposite! Listen: "Do I turn to the left? Do I turn to the right? When I turned to THE WORLD they gave me this advice:"The world" told me to follow my heart, "but my heart just led me into my chest" "The world" told me to follow my nose, "but every direction changed""The world" told me to follow my dreams, "but my dreams are only misty notions".BUT "The Father of hearts and the Maker of noses and the giver of dreams HE IS the one I've chosen and I will follow HIM" (I will NOT follow ME like the world!).This song reminds what Jesus said: "If you want to follow me, come, pick up your cross, DENY YOURSELF, and follow me." If one lives for SELF, or if a person becomes SELF-seeking, that life won't be useful. So what this song tells me is this: The WORLD tells you to follow YOURSELF, BUT if you follow your-self-, your own desires, and your own dreams, you'll go nowehere, you'll just be self-seekings and many things will be in vain in this changing world where things are uncertain and nothing lasts. IF you decide to follow GOD, the CREATOR, and TRUST Him, HE will guide you to the right place, He will give you a new heart, He will give you HIS dreams, He will give you certainty, He will guide your nose to that place of peace, when your work is rewarded, when you will not be judged by your appearance.... you'll be there IF you follow "the Father of hearts and the Maker of noses and the giver of dreams. This song is just amazing. God bless you

Feeling alone when you're with other people: sounds like the dude was a possibly extreme introvert who fell in love at some point and got his heart broken.

The Lord teaches us to have faith like a child. Once we begin to question too much and think too hard is when we begin to drift away. People read the Bible looking for answers instead of recieving advice. When we read the Bible with our own questions in mind, sometimes the answer is completely different then what we were expecting.

but it seems like God can furnish that emptiness with the furniture of his love. A simple life with your wife and kids is a good thing. Maybe that was something Rich missed out on and his delving into Catholic monasticism was his downfall maybe why the Lord took him so young.

you know there are a couple of things that Rich said that have never really sat well with me. One, now, is the follow your heart line. We should follow our heart. John Eldridge lays out the heart fully alive to Christ with the spirit of God living in it is a good compass. I think Rich is talking about his preredemptive state or people's or when he was searching. the other is how he felt alone even when he was with other people. I'm not old enough to really say otherwise about his findings

It is definitely alive! I think more people know about Rich now than when he was with us. Which is bittersweet, but it just shows what a gifted, wonderful musician he was. I'm so grateful that people are still getting to "meet" Rich. And really neat that you grew up with this, i like that he's covering generations now!! :) Rich is incredibly important to me too, he always has been an "Arrow to God" for me. <3

Wow, what a nice song!, Lovely melody... and the meaning... I've personally experienced that it true... when I follow your heart it just led me into my chest, when my nose the direction changed every time... my dreams were only misty notions... We must deny ourselves and follow Jesus , we must follow God only... "the Father of hearts and the Maker of noses, and the Giver of dreams He's the one I have chosen" Amen!

No way this song only has about 4500 views. I know I've listened to it more than that.

Thanks for finally posting one of the best songs ever. Sure beats the empty dream of "Imagine"! Written by one of the FEW real, passionate, heart-felt songwriters - Christ-following or not.
