Return To Forever were at the forefront of jazz/rock fusion in the seventies and like their contemporaries Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra were formed by a former Miles Davis sideman, in this case the great Chick Corea. Return To Forever hit their commercial and artistic peak with a string of albums in the mid-seventies featuring the line-up of Chick Corea on keyboards, Stanley Clarke on bass, Al Di Meola on guitar and Lenny White on drums. In 2008 this classic line-up reunited for their first tour in 25 years and proved that their musicianship and the chemistry within the band were as strong as ever. This concert was filmed at Montreux in July 2008 with the bonus tracks being filmed in Clearwater, Florida later the same month.

You ask me where I've been,

Earth friend,

Searching, searching for the truth,

Reaching out listening.

Many is the time I've held him by the tail,

Only to find two feathers left,

To show there was a trail.

Yes I have been searching

Searching for the truth,

Lifting stones, listening.

Many is the time I caught him,

Locked him in a room,

Only to find the curtains waving

In the breeze.

Never smile too soon with him my friend,

Never smile too soon.

I have searched and searched

My earth friend,

Running through the centuries,

From then till now to eons past.

Many is the time he talked me round,

We even sat to dine,

[ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/hymn-of-the-seventh-galaxy-lyrics-return-to-forever.html ]

Only to find he left the room,

Before I served the wine.

Only to find he left the room,

Yes, I have been searching

For the truth earth friend.

Searching across space, in space, through time.

Many of the signs he left quickened my flow,

Again to find he left the game

A universe ago.

Thank you for asking my dearest earthly friend,

But I'm searching not today.

Look close - be aware,

The answer's in my eyes,

Face to face we met today

And I'm clearing all those lies.

Yes, truth and I we met today,

He's closer than you see.

The truth is you

The truth is me

Whether here or in the seventh galaxy

The truth is you

The truth is me

Infinity

TRULY AMAIZING MUSICIANSHIP AND UPLIFTING FOREVER FUSION..RTF..

Not sure why Al Di Meola is getting such flack. Bill Connors was a brilliant guitarist, but an earnest jazz shredder. Di Meola had a sort of arrogant, aloof space-age element to his playing and tone. Plus he sort of added the fat between the high treble and grumbling bass of Stanley Clarke. If nothing else Return to Forever are one giant celebration of bashing square pegs into round holes, as deftly and technically as is possible. There music is exciting! A lot of British jazz-fusion bands like Soft Machine or Nucleus have the technical skill, but wound up making bloodlessly academic jazz noodling, whereas RTF have a weird flare, exhibitionism and canon to their music. All that medieval sorcery stuff and angular through composition gives them a unique sound, and Di Meola fits that perfectly.

In 74 at age 17, this was the song I had to play, with little notice, at an audition. I got the job, but with 2 B3 keyboard players, one on heroin, and a drunken drummer, whose father came right in with two other men, and absconded with Frank's $30, 000 rig, because he promised his father he would stay sober.....poof there goes another band fuck.I was in 4 bands in one year , in Ft Lauderdale, , and Miami, there was no music scene at all. KC? Jaco??? I went back to Ottawa, finished my Business Degree, went on to have a great career, retired at 46, and have fun with music and photography and girls, and Jaguars.

I understand what you mean. I didn't used to like jazz or jazz fusion for that reason - no big tunes, no strong chord sequences, no direction. I hated it! But, after many years, I finally started to like it. Now I love it and Return to Forever are one of my favourite bands! But I think jazz is routed in a completely different ethos to pop or rock.

This just sounds like chord changes and fast synchronous scale runs to me, but not really a song, it has no melody and no real heart of feeling, its just musicianship. Great craft with no purpose. Its skillful but boring.

Your opinion my friend. Bullshit opinion but it's yours at least.

If he is garbage why did Chick Corea pick him in the first place then?

Di Meola is garbage. He runs up and down scales all day long, hiding behind speed. He couldn't construct an interesting solo if his life depended on it.
