and Sire/Reprise

Shared a cigarette for breakfast

Shared an airplane ride for lunch

Sitting in between a ghost

And a walking bowl of punch

Can you play a little hunch?

Predicting a delay on landing

Well I predict we'll have a drink

Lost my money on the first hand

Got burned on a big fat king

And your ears is gonna ring

And your eyes just wanna close

Nothing changing I suppose

It's too late to turn back, here we go

Portland, oh no

It's too late to turn back, here we go

Portland, oh no

We'll wait away the raindrops

Look out boy, you'll catch cold

Serving boy can chain nothing

That ain't anchored to his throne

But at least he's going home

Sitting like a backwoods junkie

Caught down in a servant trust

Look at the funny monkey

Putting silver in his cup

And your silver turns to rust

And your secondhand clothes

Trust no one I suppose

It's too late to turn back, here we go

Portland, oh no

It's too late to turn back, here we go

Portland, oh no

Shared a cigarette for breakfast

Shared a pack of lights for lunch

Credit card almighty

Bringing in the next little bunch

And you owe me on a hunch

And your eyes just wanna close

And nothing changes I suppose

It's too late to turn back, here we go

Portland, oh no

It's too late to turn back, here we go

Portland, oh no

Let me set you all straight about this song cause I was at the show that this song commemorates.'Twas the Pine Street Theater, middle of August, round about 1992, hot as hell, and opened up playing Christmas songs ! Partners in crime the young fresh fellows (from seattle-check em out) opened as usual, everybody was SO HAMMERED ! and long story short, people got naked (I still have one of Westerberg's painted shoes) it was fun at first but next came the fighting, the sirens, the cops and the paddy wagons but with this song...for me anyway, all is forgiven.....Looking forward to seeing 'em this Friday at the crystal ballroom-and i'll be thinking of you Bob ! and Slim !

Great song! Written especially for Portland, OR after they showed up drunk off their rockers and did not give a very good performance. Pretty cool to write a song for the city as an apology! I cannot speak for all of Portland but these guys are completely forgiven. Come back so we can hear it live!!

I believe that the last verse should be changed to this:"Shared a cigarette for breakfastAnd a pack of LIES for lunchCredit card almightyBringing in the next little bunch..."A "pack of lies" fits the mood of being in a rather forlorn state of mind.

Wow, that's where the bridge in Talent Show came from! Very cool track that I hadn't heard before - thanks for posting.
