Oh my God . . . this song means much too much . . .I . . . I had been heavily bullied from kindergarten to the middle of junior year . . . for not acting "black enough", for being proper, for being a dancer, for the shape of my head, for my sexuality, the music I listen to, for wearing clothes that I like, that actually fit me . . . for going the wrong way while doing the Soulja Boy at my eighth-grade dance!!!I've had my backpack thrown in the women's bathroom toilet, been criticized for years -- even now, still -- by my adoptive mother, gone through full nights of sobbing and hyperventilating, kicking through doors, not doing schoolwork . . . I now have had stress-linked epilepsy for six years because of the fact that I couldn't constantly ignore the idiocy that continuously barraged my eyes and ears. But I remembered this song, all of a sudden, while looking up a famous drag queen and discovering that she'd performed in a production of Rent . . . I remembered that in eighth grade -- the worst year both in school and at home -- at the end of the year, my Show Choir teacher had us sing Rent's Finale B as the final 8th grade song. He explained where the song was from, and almost all of Rent's plot, which even at age thirteen I knew I would never forget. But as a high-school senior outside of that hellhole of a school, completely free for once . . . and sitting here, waiting to move into my dorm in a week . . . for a year and a half I had been working hard as fuck to put all of that shit out of any crack or crevice of my emotional focus, so that my first year in a private art college in Detroit can be without anything crazy like relapses or breakdowns. But I remembered the Rent musical because of a drag queen Wikipedia article, and I came immediately to Finale B even before Seasons of Love . . . and I pressed play -- *But I could not even CLAW my way through the lyrics because I was shot straight through the forehead with about 6 bullets of speechless crying. In 8th grade I was so caught up in enjoying singing this complicated (for 8th grade) song that I did not realize what both of the layers of lyrics meant until today, August 19th of 2014 . . .And I did not realize that I have COME PAST ALL OF THAT BULLSHIT, and I am COMPLETELY able to forget the emotional terrors of grade school. Because there is NO [FUCKING] DAY BUT TODAY.*Yes I have written what could easily be taken for some common, pitiful sob story that wastes enough space for a celebrity memoir. But I'll check my schedule to see if I have time for you to *kiss my ass*, because I'm a passionate person, about music, about dance, about everything, but especially about preventing bullying.
