I absolutely agree. Norman and Masur have done a job for eternity. And you don´t need Zeitgeist to understand that kind of music. It´s transcendental and the saddest way of saying goodbye without grief or regret. And THAT must be put into sound by the orchestra and the singer. So you need two smart people here - the conductor and the singer. Masur, knowing his Strauss extremely well and Norman, being always on the verge of discovery, did what they had to do - unite their mastership. Fleming is lightyears away from that.

Fleming´s interpretation lacks emotions and that ethereal aspect Jessye Norman shows, just to mention a striking alternative. Fleming doesn´t understand how to treat the endings of phrases. They leave me with questions. And whilst Abbado - not an emotional conductor himself - tries to get the most out of the music, as far as he reads it, Fleming is just a songbird without a concept. If you see it, please share your thoughts with me.

John Gilbert The four last songs were first performed in 1948 by The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Wilhelm Furtwangler. Richard Strauss composed them but sadly died before they were perfomed.

Lisa della Casa sang these songs and others with Strauss conducting. That mean something.

one of the most beautiful songs ever composed, and Fleming's voice is just rich and sublime, wonderful recording!

It's amazing to think this sublime piece was written by an 84 year old when we all know that most people that age barely know their own name. Wonderful song.

I read the negative comments on Fleming's and Abbado's performance and I can't help thinking: who the hell are these ridiculous persons to criticise such divine interpreters? It's obvious that they have no idea of what music is all about. And when you don't have an idea of something it's better and wiser to keep your mouth shut.

The problem here is Abbado! Fleming has the ideal voice for this piece but she can't make it under Abbado.

@jadran1959 You're no fool Jadran--and you don't have to appeal to Abbado for confirmation. She is what the Jazzers in the 80s called "a monster." So transcendently beautiful---so deep into the meaning of the text and the musical phrase. Only some narrow-minded, stingy, niggling, niggardly pencil neck (or some one deaf in their heart) could speak ill of this.

I was extremely lucky to obtain tickets for Renee's performance of these songs at the proms in London, and I can assure everyone it was a night I shall never forget, and cannot listen to a rendition of this song by Renee without shedding a tear. SUBLIME

@jadran1959 you are no fool... all these souls who have blessed us with their readings from kiri, jessie, Gundula, Schwartzkopf, Birgit, and many others are part of an unfathomable tapestry of soul... there is no shame in revealing in the absolute truth of usic.

@colorsofritual We don't all like Schwartzkopf, one of the most overrated singers of all time. No I'm not a fan of that Nazi at all. Fleming's earlier renditions are better, lately she has gotten a little sloppy, but she still has beautiful moments.

@Pywacket2 I can't believe the nonsense I am reading. You listen to a Diva and squabble about trivia. Do none of you care about art ?
