Here's a whole band that flew under the radar. Renaissance with the beautiful voice of Annie Haslam was known more for their live performances than for their studio work. In the haunting melody Black Flame you can pick up on their classical training. Great musicians together with Annie's exquisite voice, it truly is a wonderful piece that never got the recognition it deserved. Enjoy...

well, they didn't fly completely under the radar because I remember hearing them on FM radio back in the mid-1970s and enjoying them whenever the DJ played them. I think they may have been on the King Biscuit Flour Hour as well. Anyway, I have not heard this song for close to 40 years and it popped into my head today so I thought I might find it here... thanks for posting it!

This is Annie at her finest. Never saw them but have been a fan since 1978 when I first heard them. This, or Renaissance that is, were as close to a classical music sounding band as you will find. They were never a big name and saw limited exposure in the USA outside of the east coast and a little of the west coast. I do remember hearing that they were especially popular in Russia -- not surprising given there sound and the names of several of there songs.Bran

I think I know the reason this song is so popular for a lesser known album track. Back in 1975, Renaissance performed on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert TV Show. This was just about the time the U.S. FM radio stations were starting to play them. The two songs the did were "Can You Understand" and "Black Flame". For a lot of people, me included, this was their first chance to see this band perform. Those fans that watched that night will always remember those two songs.

"Black Flame" relates to the Vietnam War and the horrors of killing." Interview With Betty Thatcher and Annie Haslam - From WYSP Radio Broadcast 27 June 1993. Thank you Wikipedia.

I saw them open for Gentle Giant in 76. It was a dream concert. Her beauty & angelic voice sent my soul soaring! Heavenly!

Yes, that is the issue. I have followed them, for almost 40 years, but they are mainly known in Philadelphia and New York, and of course, England.

I cannot say for sure I know for a fact what the song is about and I don't know enough about Annie to know why she and Renaissance performed it. However, there may be a sinister side to the meaning. After reading about MK Ultra and Monarch mind control projects I often wonder if the lyrics are about a mind control victim struggling against their programming. The esoteric album cover also leads me in this direction. I still love this haunting song.

I guess it means passion, talent, creativity, madness - what ever grabes you and consumes you. I really love that song, but can't say I know the meaning as they meant.

Can someone, other than a know-it-all music critic, tell me what this song is about, and why Annie performed it? Thanks in advance. Hot Ajax

I was about to say, even on the last live Beaker Street from 2009, Clyde Clifford spun the live version of "Mother Russia" to open the show. I miss my buddy Clyde and his amazing vinyl collection...

I'm stunned to only have recently discovered this truly amazing band even though I've been a rock/prog rock fan for ages. Just about the complete volume of their output is really AAA work and I suggest to anyone that just bumped onto this page to really check them out.

Amazing band, amazing voice - have loved them since the 70s. This is one of my favorites!

You are so right. I think only the mighty Karen Carpenter, do I like for female singers, as much as Annie, who continues all these years. Very difficult on the West Coast here in USA, to find people who have heard of the band , much less love Renassiance.

Been a fan of Renaissance since 1972 and have seen them in concert about 5 or 6 times as recently as last summer. Annie Haslam with her 5 octave vocal range is probably the best female singer I have ever heard. Micheal Dunford is an accomplished guitar player and song writer. If you get a chance to see them live do so. Listening to Annie's voice alone is worth the price of admission alone!

I was fortunate to grow up with Beaker Street.. played a lot of Renaissance songs. They were a big spot on the radar here.
