This poem, these words influenced me greatly. Inspired my writing. Michael Stipe proved a poem did not need to rhyme - in the conventional sense at least. What you write - the rhythm you create within syntax alone - makes a mood. Serious - and marvelous for its profundity. Not as specific as the politics of Midnight Oil - another great influence - R.E.M. were making music with an eternal vivacity. I remember getting into it - I was 16 - a girlfriend at the time had a shared view. "It doesn't matter how many times you listen to it"She would say - and it's still true - 25 years later. Pretty much every poem I've ever written is based on this. I just love the way he "decrees a stalemate.""Green" was such an enigma. The first time lyrics had been printed on an R.E.M. sleeve. Although it was only one song - Green featured 10 songs - equally enigmatic - equally difficult to decipher. WLP was singled out as a particular representation of the bands art form at the time - it was all so intrinsically intriguing! "World Leader Pretend"I sit at my table and wage war on myselfIt seems like it's all, it's all for nothingI know the barricadesAnd I know the mortar in the wall breaksI recognise the weapons, I've used them wellThis is my mistakeLet me make it goodI raised the wallAnd I will be the one to knock it downI've a rich understanding of my finest defencesI proclaim that claims are left unstatedI demand a rematchI decree a stalemateI divine my deeper motivesI recognise the weaponsI've practised them wellI fitted them myselfIt's amazing what devices you can sympathizeEmpathiseThis is my mistake, let me make it goodI raised the wallAnd I will be the one to knock it downReach out for me (and)Hold me tightHold that memoryLet my machine talk to meLet my machine talk to meThis is my world, and I am World Leader PretendThis is my life, and this is my timeI have been given the freedom to do as I see fitIt's high time I razed the walls that I've constructedIt's amazing what devices you can sympathizeEmpathiseThis is my mistake, let me make it goodI raised the wallAnd I will be the one to knock it downYou fill in the mortarYou fill in the harmonyYou fill in the mortarI raised the wallAnd I'm the only oneI will be the one to knock it down-Berry, Buck, Mills, Stipe
