1993's "Automatic For The People"

Monty this seems strange to me

The movies had that movie thing,

But nonsense has a welcome ring

And heroes don't come easy

Now nonsense isn't new to me

I know my head, I know my feet,

But mischief knocked me in the knees

Said, Just let go, just let go

I saw the ocean meet the man

I saw you buried in the sand

A friend was there to hold your hand,

Said, Walk on by

So, I went walking through the street

I saw you strung up in a tree

A woman knelt there said to me,

Said, Hold your tongue, hold your tongue

You don't owe me anything

You don't want this sympathy (waste your breath)

Don't you waste your breath (waste your breath)

For the silver screen

That nonsense doesn't mean a thing,

They tried to bust you in a sting,

But virtue isn't everything

So, don't waste time

Now, here's a rhyme that you can steal

Put this on your reel to reel

Mischief threw a rotten deal

Monty's laying low

He is laying low

Just let go, y'all

Just let go

You don't owe me anything

You don't want this sympathy (waste your breath)

Don't you waste your breath (waste your breath)

Monty this seems strange to me

This song, the whole album actually, has a really dynamic sound, if you have a kick ass stereo system, crank it up and let it roll. It deserves better than ear buds or whatecer

I've been a fan of the band for many many years, and originally, this was a track that I would skip. Says something about how many great songs there are on AFTP, yes, but I think it's maybe because of the way the drums are produced that I never really loved this song to begin with. I liked it, but didn't love it. Now I'm playing it on ukulele to my little daughter, and I've come to like it a lot. It's really a well-written song, but the album version has some "hard" sounds that I think ruin the otherwise beautiful composition. Ignoreland, which is actually another pretty good song, has kinda the same sound/feel to it that just sounds out of place on an otherwise perfect album.

REM is the best band out of those four, and I don't think it's particularly close. IMO.

I'm agreed with you Timothy Dannenhoffer, absolutely.

This is probably one of their least cryptic songs, though. This one's autobiographical about Montgomery Clift, the things that happened in his life and the iconic scenes in his movies.

I didn't realise until now genuinely how multi-talented the instrument-playing members of the were, particularly Bill Berry. He not only played the drums, but also guitar, bass, synthesizer, piano/keyboard, he played melodica in this song and apparently he can also play the mandolin. Can anyone think of someone who was just a "drummer" for a band yet could play so many other instruments?

Every REM album since has contained some great songs. And Up remains an interesting album that has genuine grandeur running through its sonic experiments (climaxing in Falls to Climb). But I must say that both Monster and New Adventures in Hi-Fi can also be called 'Great' with a capital G and their final album Collapse In To Now contained the great songs Alligator_Aviator_Autopilot_Antimatter and E-bow the letter /Country feedback-like crossover Blue.
