Or people would think he sang, "we could gather, throw up beer," which Stipe would actually sing every now and then!

Nel 1985 in Italia i rem si ascoltavano solo ed esclusivamente a Catania merito solo di Chicco Virlinzi

that said...SS is by far my favourite REM song.

That's true. I've watched Radio Free Europe played live numerous times here and each time the lyrics are different. Would have loved if MS brought that style right through to the 90s.

I can guarantee you, that in ten years time, there will still be people argueing if he is singing "we can gather through our fear" or "we can gather throw a fit" :)

@thuriferthecenser Oh no, it's not the chiming Rickenbacker/Vox sound I objected to.. That is/was Buck's signature sound. It's whatever modulated chorus or flange pedal he was using around the time of the Fables tour. You can hear it pretty clearly in this video.

*In Memoriam R.E.M.*Some say that R.E.M. was never the same after Bill Berry left. I still considered Michael, Mike and Peter R.E.M., but today they are no more as a band.R.E.M. was the soundtrack for a good part of my life, especially from high school through college and the college halo/hangover that followed.I guess I assumed that they would always be together. But, this is rock and roll and sometimes break-ups make for awesome reunions. Here are two tracks from two of my favorite albums; *Sitting Still* from Murmur and *Maps and Legends* from Fables of the Reconstruction.

@Issicra Sorry, gonna have to disagree with you there, if only for personal reasons, That chiming Rickenbacker encapsulated the sound of college radio in the mid 80's.

Sitting Still is my favorite REM song of all time. Only Perfect Circle comes close.

My biggest complaint about REM during the Fables period is that Buck had too much flange/chorus on his guitar... and that it was even more pronounced live. I was glad that this was corrected later in Pageant and Document.... just my opinion.
