Bo11: This great album was re-issued in 2011 and this is the lead song. Check this vid out: they actually sound good live for once (I've seen them 3 times, non good). The studio work is great tho!

From lyrics like "let's put our heads to together and start a new country up" to all the references to the civil war, this album, Lifes Rich Pageant, was a call to revolution. I wonder how many people missed that point?

Man...this song is too perfect. It's basically just the chords F# - A - E - F# with D thrown in for the hell of it every so often. Such a simple song. Basically a bluesy sort of progression...but it allows Stipes super unique manner of singing melodies to shine. I love how he hits all these little chromatic notes...as many have noted...many suspended seconds and fourths. From a music theory perspective, this song is so interesting to deconstruct. Writing such a simple yet amazing song is an art.
