Haha...um, the sound? The samples he chooses, the way he cuts them up, the melodies he makes. You know...they just sound better. AND, his signature is incredible, nobody else sounds like him and you can always tell when it's a Premo beat. If you haven't, listen to some of the Gang Starr albums, because the beats he did when he was in Gang Starr are much different than the beats he does for other artists. Listen to the last album they did, "The Ownerz," and also listen to "The Moment of Truth."cd

Yeah, I don't get it though, what makes his beats weak? What makes DJ Premier, so much better than Statik?

Frank Furter

I tell you who's waaaaaaaaayy better. Just Blaze. There you go.

Frank Furter

I already told you why! Haha...his beats just aren't that good.

If Statik is nothing special, then who is? I know he is not on Premier or Nujabes' level but still a great producer.

We've had a long ass argument haha. You clearly know your Hip Hop. Yeah I get that he was real, and I love songs like "Skillz", or "Full Clip" etc. but I thought the songs the weren't hits were pretty average. Don't get me wrong "Moment of Truth" was a solid album, but I like emotions in the song. I wanna feel something, which Guru couldn't do. Why do you dislikie Statik then? Statik >>>> DJ Khaled.

You replied to yourself - but I got it. I'll check him out - why don't you like statik?

There's this up and coming producer, "Confidence", who is NICE. Waaaaayyy better than Statik, you should check him out. Right now he's got an album out with a rapper named Rashad. Rashad and Confidence, "The Element Of Surprise." Check it out, it's VERY good, especially coming from someone I've never heard of before. But that's the point I am trying to make, there's so many better producers than Selektah.

Statik is the epitome of average, HAHA. The thing about Guru, he's definitely monotone, but a lot of rappers are. But the thing about Guru was he was always talking about some real shit. Always teaching a lesson, shit like that. And Bumpy Knuckles, his album "Industry Shakedown" is a MUST have. So many bangers on there. But again, Statik is nothing special whatsoever to me.

Haha. I agree with that. And I really am not hating on Premo, that's just a battle I cannot win. I love Premo, and he deserves the love. People just can't forget about the lyrics. That's the only reason I think he's overrated. He takes over the song when he only makes the beat. I wasn't the biggest fan of Bumpy Knuckles - or even Guru for that matter - I thought he was quite monotone. Back on subject though - Statik is great! Hahaha!

I like those guys too! But they are nowhere close to being incredible lyricists. Yea, but the beat is usually more powerful, what really carries the song. A dude could be spittin' the illest lyrics you ever heard, but if the beat is wack I JUST CAN'T LISTEN.

I love Big Shug and Blaq Poet. I have their albums on my phone. Blaq Poets one of my favourite people he's worked with. I love his kinda gritty and depressing voice. My favourite Blaq Poet song is Sitchuatshuns (I probably spelled that wrong!) and Premo didn't produce that. I hear what you're saying, but a good song needs good lyricism IMO. And if you go to a song with good lyrics, generally only Premier will be shouted out on that - not the lyrics. I don't wanna hate on Premier though!

That's actually not true. Premier has worked with a TON of lyricists who are average. Blaq Poet, Big Shug, NYG'z, Teflon, even Bumpy Knuckles is no amazing emcee. We are judging Premier for his production skills. His scratches, cuts, are always on point. Premo is a legend, man, and he continues to put out bangers. That's why people will always mention him like that.

You uhhh. You asked if I knew what DJ Premier has done. But then jumped to say that I didn't know. I've "done my homework". I know about Premo, I'm just saying he gets more love than the quality of his DJing. Two things make a great song with DJ Premier - he has good beats, but the lyricists are always great, Guru, Royce, REKS, Bumpy Knuckles - yet no one shouts out REKS or Guru for profound lyricism on their video's, who makes the song really. DJ Premier is good at picking good lyricists.
