Samson, whose name means sunshine, was a fictional character whose life is meant to show what happens when you choose earthly pleasures, like his weakness for women, over God's expressed will. His passionate obsession for Delilah led him to reveal to her the secret of his strength, his hair. Delilah, who took money from his enemies in return for her services, cut it as he slept, and, as a result, he was captured, blinded, and forced to work for his enemies. While in prison, Samson’s strength returned as his hair grew, and he died while destroying the Philistine's temple and killing thousands of them.Despite Samson’s weaknesses, he did turn back to God before he died, and God used him to fulfill his purpose. In the Bible, Samson’s death did much to impede the oppressive actions of the Philistines. The destruction of the temple was a major factor in their downfall by Samuel over 100 years later. The theme is clear: He was the strongest man to ever live, but it was God who gave him his strength, and it was Samson who let himself be used by God.Regina puts her own spin on the story, pretty clearly telling a story of someone in her own life she likens to the Samson in the Samson/Delilah story. She also could be imagining a different take on how Delilah felt, as some like to think she was threatened into giving up the information. Regardless, the story of Samson/Delilah is fiction and this song is just beautiful.

She might be the start of this nonsensical style of singing.

This song is actually about a relationship where her partner has cancer. Its really sad. When she talks about wonderbread some people actually think that it can prevent losing hair (im guessing from the chemo).

To the very day I don't know, what she was doing to me in that concert, seeing and hearing her performing 'samson' live. It was sooo touching! Maybe in future they will tell, she was on of the greatest!

I think Regina Spektor does a good job of continuing Leonard Cohen's tradition of drawing from the bible in her poetry.
