If you're never sorry

Then you can't be forgiven

If you're not forgiven

Then you can't be forgotten

If you're not forgotten

Then you can live forever

If you live forever

Then you'll begin to dream

Of death

Death, death, death

Deaaath

Ezra Pound sat upon my bed

Asked me which books as of late I've read

Ezra Pound sat upon my bed

Asked me which books as of late I've read

Asked me if I've, uh, I've read his own

And whether I could spare a pound

Of flesh to cover his bare bones

I says, man, take a pound

Take two

What's a pound of flesh between

Friends like me and you?

What's a pound

Of flesh among friends?

What's a pound

Of flesh among friends?

But if you're never sorry

If you're never sorry

If you're never sorry

Then you can't be forgiven

If you're not forgiven

Then you can't be forgotten

If you're not forgotten

Then you must live forever

If you live forever

You cannot be reborn

If you're not reborn, then

You can't be a baby

If you're not a baby

You can't learn how to crawl

If you cannot crawl away

Then you must stay in bed all day

If you stay in bed all day

You're sure to have some visitors

Ezra Pound will sit upon your bed

Ask you which books as of late you have read

Ask you if you've, uh, uh, read his own

And whether you could spare a pound

Of flesh to cover his bare bones

You'll say, man, take a pound

Take two

What's a pound of flesh between

Friends like me and you?

What's a pound

Of flesh among friends?

What's a pound

Of flesh among friends?

What's a pound

Of flesh among friends?

altho intrigued by all the theories...i have to admit that i just love the song. i love the "logic"al procession of if-then throughout the whole song. i think it's an excellent play on words. she's amazing. the meaning just adds another level of genius that i'm not sure if i can wrap my head around since she's already beyond belief.

Oh, yeah -- also relevant here is that Miss Spektor herself is Jewish, so there's a bit of symbolism in putting herself in the position of giving an anti-semite and Axis supporter 'a pound of flesh.'

I would say overall the song seems to be about forgiveness and living life despite the harsh demands it sometimes makes.

I'm not sure of the particular relevance of the lyrics. I suspect that the 'staying in bed' part bears some relationship to Pound's incarceration in a hospital for twelve years. I would also assume both they and the music bear some relation to the writings of Ezra Pound, but I've never read him; what I've deduced about the song is thanks to looking him up on Wikipedia when I first heard it.

Ezra pound believed WW2 was an economic matter, and denounced ursury (lending at interest). He also added anti-semetic overtones to his propaganda after living in Italy for some time. One of the most famous ursurers in literature is Shylock the Jew from Shakespeare, who lent a substantial sum of money with the terms of default being a pound of flesh.

I just found a playwrite by Michael Bollus about Pound in a play called "Pound of Flesh" Perhaps a reference? Or this poem is just one giant extended metaphor, or there is just nothing but illusions, and regina was trying to make us freak out :p <3 her

perhaps the correlation lies in the "if I had read his own" or perhaps there are dual meanings, "if you cannot crawl away.." What if she means if you sacrifice your opinion, or voice (democracy) facisim, or evil as represented by Ezra Pound, will price you a "pound of flesh" something that costs too much for sacrificing freedom, criticizing Pound"s views and that of communism, and Pound published many a paper and magazine on communism perhaps, there's a reference to his stress on the economy

Ezra pound was anti-Semitic, and he did support the communist party, he saw it as something that could succeed if handled properly, he is seen as a traitor, he spent time in Italy during WWII broadcasting demoralizing accounts of American, but it was on the wrong frequency for American troops, so there was some speculation to that, but, I think the connection lies between the saying "pound of flesh among friends" more to follow..
