I love this song so much. I organised the Redgum benefit tour of Tassie in 1982 for the Wilderness Society, it was a financial failure overall but I remember hearing the Diamantina Drover for the very first time at their gig in Sandy Bay, it may have been at the Casino,or Battery Point, I can't remember, but they put out the EP soon after and I wrote a review which was published in the TasUni paper, asserting they were on the verge of something great and encouraging them to run with their fantastically melodic bridges and solos. A bit later they released Frontilne, which saw them maturing in leaps and bounds, but unfortunately it was swept in the basket. Best Australian band of all time.

Love this song, am from the Portland mentioned at the start. Redgum lyrics still valid after 30 years, amazing songwriters.

yeah, I saw Redgum so many times I've lost count. They were always so good live.

That took me back, I remember seeing RedGum At Festival Hall (BNE) when this was new. RedGum always did write from the heart and this is one one the most haunting along with the likes of Last Frontier and Gladstone Pier. Thanks for posting.
