I know dance fans don't care much for vocal groups and vocal fans don't give a hoot about big bands, but I thought I'd put in a word for the Songcopators trio, who figure prominently in the full film. They were Jack Wilcher, George Bacon and Russ Crowell. They worked frequently with Red on radio and records.

Not from 1933 -- this is from the Vitaphone Melody Master short called "Red Nichols & His World Famous Pennies," which was released in January of 1936. The entire 10:31 film can be viewed at Dailymotion.I suspect the sound in this clip is dubbed -- note that Nichols' opening notes are of a muted trumpet. (Also notice the bad editing from 0:24 to 0:25, when the two trumpeters on the left are suddenly 8 feet further away!)

Notice the inherent, perpaps unconscious racism of the time. The black folk are outside in the cold and never mix with the "respectable" company inside the warm barn, who watch and play along together but at a safe distance, never a one of them crossing the threshold. Interesting. I'm sure this was racial progress for those times -- participating, contributing together on same song. Videos/movies today would be excoriated for showing such a scene that even has any smacking of racism.

any idea where I might find the music to own? It doesn't come up as one of the tracks in the soundtrack to The Five Pennies

Does anyone know who the sidemen are? My grandfather, John Egan, was one of the five pennies: he's in the "Red Nichols and his Five Pennies: 1929" clip posted here.

The gravity-defying tap dancers are so good they make it look easy. They must have given the Nicholas Brothers some competition.

The dancers are Red and Struggie. There's another clip of them on YouTube. They're singing and dancing with Don Redman's band on the song Nagasaki.
