More info on Reason: http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/

PLEASE NOTE: Record as a product is discontinued but all of it's features are included in Reason 6 and above. Anything showed using Record can be used in Reason 6 and above.

In this microtutorial we'll build up a track - starting from an 8 bar loop - and ending with a full song structure all thanks to Blocks, the pattern-based workflow feature in Reason 5 and Record 1.5. Blocks is a quick way to brainstorm, experiment, arrive at an idea and take it to the next level of arrangement and production.

I cant believe how happy i am to have gone back to reason last week... holy cow WOW!!!.. it basically has everything needed... ever... the way vst automation ACTUALLY WORKS as well... NO ONE has that nailed like you guys... One thing I wish is that audio clips could be transposed a lot more than just one octave. I know I could just use a sampler but, I'm one of those people that prefers dealing with audio clips for things like drums and... well.. a lot of things. Say I throw some sound fx sample onto a track... many times I will take something like that and transpose the shit out of it... unfortunately I can only transpose the heck out of it... as opposed to the shit out of it. :D

So for years I’ve only ever used song mode. Doing the whole track. Thought I’d check out what the blocks was. Should’ve checked it out earlier

Blocks is a great idea...quite similar to what the pattern/song mode in FL Studio.  However, one thing that gets me is the limitation of 32 blocks/patterns in Reason.  That's quite a small limit considering FL Studio's pattern limit (last time I checked) is 999 patterns.  Many songs I've written and write already exceed 32 patterns.  I would really like to see this change.

Is it possible to copy blocks? At the moment I create a new block and copy and paste everything from the old block into the new block which seems a bit cumbersome. This would be good to know for creating things like key changes in outro choruses. Thanks!

May require use of razor tool at bar lines to separate your regions so they're suitable for copying... And then when pasting into blocks area I found they didn't line up quite right and I couldn't drag them to 1|1|0 position; had to type in numbers to get them there... Weird!

What I love most about YouTube is how pleasant and respectful it is.
