I think most big-name vocalists today are there because of their 'look' much more than their voice. Looks have always been pretty big but I agree, too many 'big name' stars just don't sing that well. Also because of the musical content. I've seen some fabulous singers in modern bands but they sing in bands that are outside of mainstream genres.

It's too bad mainstream commercial rock stations can only play Ain't that a Shame, I want you to Want me, Etc. Cheap Trick has so many better songs than those, including this one! Both of the Trick songs on the Heavy Metal soundtrack are KICK ASS! And yet we never hear them on the radio.
