I've only heard this version and Johnny Cash's, though I'm aware other versions exist. I honestly don't know which one I like better. This one's more melodic, and melody can lend a lot to the emotion of a song. On the other hand, Johnny Cash's vocals seem to capture the whole regretful hung over booze hound feeling better.

A nice singing voice, but mis-matched to the gritty tone of the lyrics. Just not hearing that as true. Also, massively over-produced, instrumentation and arrangement all wrong for the tone of the lyrics, especially the hang-over beer, "smoked my brain", "songs that I'd been pickin'". Too polished for such awesome stripped-down real lyrics.
