"Before it's too late and you throw your life away." That one resonates with so many of us at this time .

I'm surprised that this song wasn't used to close an episode of 'Mad Men'. It describes Don Draper and his cohorts soooo well; it could have been the theme to the show.

The lyrics easily make this song one of Ray's best social commentary songs that he did. (Not to forget, the orchestration of the song, itself.) This song as relevant today, as it was back in 1968. Thank you for posting it.

For anyone interested, I have now noticed that there are anything up to five or more 'versions' of this track floating around. 1. The original 45 mono, the BEST version, this has the original backing track and vocal take. 2. There is the Stereo 'album' version, same as the 45 but obviously in stereo. 3. The 'Greatest Hits' LP version, same backing track, different vocal take, it's 'ok'. 4. The QUAD version, just awful, same backing track, different vocal take 'again' and LOTS of reverb, low level overall, no punch to it and to top it off the ending is truncated, fades out after the chorus is sung one time only, again just awful! 5. So now there is 'this' version, which I am not sure where it has been sourced from, but it has a slightly different backing track and yet another 'vocal take' and in my opinion is an awful vocal take like he has sung it for the 1,000 time & is trying to give it something it doesn't need, not sincere in it's delivery. I am aware that Ray re-recorded a couple of hits when he changed labels from Monument to Barnaby but not sure if that's the reasons for all these changes. Well that's it, just because I adore this song, the singer and it's message. Does anyone also know any more info or of any MORE versions around??? :)

I love the meaning of this song, it had a meaning to it for the hippies parents, but they fell into the same trap as them, written ahead of his time for sure, wish I could post it on my Facebook

Still has the punch of when it was first released. He has written a lot of clever stuff...some with political bias..So be it...This one will last.

It was interesting in 1968 to hear Ray Stevens do a serious song. Now many of us are living the song ....

This is a brilliant number and as relevant now as when first released. And who would think such a great number would contain the word "epitaph"? Illustrates Ray Stevens' talent and versatility.

Happy Birthday Ray! Little did you know that this song would be very bit as true today as it was then... even more so now! I actually was told of this song as it was quoted by a well known preacher.. Alistair Begg of truthforlife at the Parkside Church in Cleveland, Ohio. When I listened to this after so many years it rang so true to the world system today and it's influence on people.

This is actually the original single mix; I remember it clearly from '68. The various hits compilations have an alternate lead vocal track.
