I was in elementary school when WWII broke out. This was one of the songs played quite often. The words were modified with the later versions. The original version made reference to Tojo and the Axis. Can't remember the other modificaqtion, believe there were some more.

The older we get, we all lose soooo many people in our life. It's hard I know.

My husband and I live in Mission, Texas, right on the border. We are about 7 or 8 miles up the road from the Rio Grande. I met my husband after my first husband died. He has been a great blessing to me. We still listen to the "old stars."

I remember when Carswel AFB was named Kelly Field before it became Carswel. I also remember the planes flying over our neighborhood in Fort Worth. My parents told me about Colin Kelly when I was a young girl about 8 years old.

Mary we all wonder when we got old, I haven't figured it out myself yet although I was born after world war two but my mom played a lot of Ray Priced and it was ingrained into to me I guess. When the Beatles came out I was saying "who wants to listen to that stuff??? " LOL

I'm in my 80's, remmeber this song when it came out. we sang it in elementry school in music class. Love the song then and still do. Ray did change some of the words from the origional song. In the origional there were references to Tojo, and the Axis.

Randon trivia... he mentions Colin Kelly (pronounced "colon") the WW2 pilot who died saving his crew. Colin Powell began pronouncing his name "colon" after him despite his parents simply naming him Colin (pronouned "ah" short "o" as in Colin Hanks or Colin Firth. You're welcome. ;-)

So nice ta meet ya Jeri, we have a few things in common. I'm sorry to hear you lost your husband, it's good is your finding friends here. I'm also alone, I lost my momma 5 yrs ago. My daughter lives in Redding so I see her often. I am an old soul also thanks to my momma. New country is like nails on a blackboard to me. I grew up on Ernest Tubb (my daddys fav.) Hank W. Sr. Kitty Wells and all the good ol' boys n gals of the era. I have a great friend in Lake Havasu. [email protected]

I'm about 20 miles east of Tombstone AZ, where all the cowboys live!!! I grew up on the old country from as long as I can remember, I'm 10 years younger but I always felt I was kind of an "old soul" thanks to mom. I can't stand listen to the new country, it just lacks something. Funny, sometimes I've met some of my best friends her on this computer. My husband died a couple years ago and well my hobby now is tracking down old Ray music and putting up what I can here on You Tube. Jeri

Seems like we're losing too many of the great country artists lately. I still kick myself that I never saw Marty in concert. But I did make it to see Ray Price last August, at the age 85, he can still a sing a great song. Hopefully he'll be back on tour soon and I'll strive to make another of his shows.

Funny you should mention Chime Bells. I'm also a big fan of Marty Robbins. If you look on You Tube for "Don Winters Chime Bells", Don also did a good version of this and actually traveled all over the world yodeling. Don Winters was in Marty's band for many years and was still with him when Marty Died in 1982. The video was taken from one of Marty's last concerts, and if you watch it till the end, I'm sure it was Marty off stage that added that little bit of "extra sound" at the end. LOL

Origanally sung by Elton Britt on Bluebird Record 1942..Elton Britt (June 27, 1913–June 22, 1972), born James Elton Baker...if you have a minute listen to "Chime Bells",here on youtube (boy could he youdel) ... He was still having hits in 1968. One, if not his last hits was "The Jimmie Rodgers Blues". I do feel fortunate to have the original sheet music to "There's a Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere".
