NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (M~G~M 13336) Out of Nashville, this disc is the fourth of eight singles issued by Ray Peterson on the M~G~M label between 1964 and 1966. A great arrangement by singer/arranger/producer, Ray Stevens. The tune was first recorded brilliantly by Roy Orbison in 1963 and included on his 'In Dreams' LP. Gene Pitney recorded it in 1964 also as an album track. Ray Peterson's version was released in early 1965 followed by a version by Cliff Richard in April of 1965. Roy's original version is a tough act to follow, but Ray comes closest to the mark.

@reichardtaj I love both versions equally and would love to have heard Sammy Turner sing it.

Ray sings this great song in an effortless manner and his voice soars through the finish.

Hmmm. This might have made it if the intro had been left off, starting with the vocal. It is a good arrangement, except for that intro. Ray's voice, though he tries hard, is really not up to the operatic demands of the song, perhaps making it more likeable to the 1965 audience. I do prefer Roy and Gene, (Cliff's is decidely odd, with that soft singing at the end) but this is the most commercial version. Too bad it didn't sell. Great song and wonderful learned commentary! Thanks.
