Lyrics

I found a postcard the other day

A faded photograph taken of a cold winterscape

And all the children that gathered round

Asked what the place was on the faded card that I had found

It was a city I used to know

And as a child when it was Christmas

I played in the winter snow

It was the homeland I left behind

A better future waiting in the new world that we hoped to find

Across the oceans far south we came

And left the country that somehow we knew we'd never see again

And read the message that you wrote

On the reverse of that same postcard always seemed to give me hope

Though time will pass us and fade from view

I hope sometimes you think of me because I'll always think of you

And to the children who gathered round

I said 'This is the place of long ago we all called London Town'

Postcard from London's romantic views

Only serve to keep reminding me of how much I missed you

Postcard from London

Postcard from London Town

Postcard from London

Postcard from London Town

We built a snowman by Hampstead Pond

Walked down to Waterloo at Yuletide and we sang so many songs

Later you went there not to return

I took for granted love we had now I will always yearn

For the great city we used to know

We were so innocent back then when we played in the winter snow

And now the children who gather round

Ask where the place is in the postcard

I say proudly 'It was London Town'

"I hope sometimes you'll think of me because I'll always think of you."Missed opportunities. Mixed emotions. Best wishes for the Christmas season-a lovely piece of music and glorious visuals to remind us when memories fade away. Just beautiful.

Greater lyricist than Beatles Paul and John put together.

I had always thought the song was about the 'Coast Guard from London'. Didn't quite make sense but had a nice beat. Now I understand that John is saying Post Card rather than Coast Guard. That John Davidson is pretty tricky, I'd say.

Is it too much to ask for this to be played on radio 2. What do Ray Davis's promo people actually do.Lovely seasonal track , never heard it played on the radio once.

@davlinful I am a resident of Australia and that'sexactly how I interpreted this song ever since the first time I heard this song, knowing that Ray had visited Australia and reunited with his sister Rose one year earlier. That reunion must have inspired Ray to write this song.

Reminded me of the evening I shared a pint with Ray Davies in "The Hole in the Wall," pub, London!

Ray has written a lof of this song from his Sisters Rose point of view. She emigrated to Australia when Ray was in his early teens and he missed(s) her. Now listen again and pretend Rays sister Rose is singing the song somewhere in Australia. It makes sense then,, Also when Ray was on tour in Australia he came back to find Chrissie Hind had left him and emptied the flat (tTo the bone?)

This song made happy and sad at the same time.. It made cry tears of joy and sadness as well.. This is really just a reflection of Ray looking back on his life his youth his love of the past, CHrissy... Yes its beautiful and every Ray fan should see this video... In reflection of his days with the Kinks and the life he lived with all its many colours that painted that life of rock and roll band on the road and the love that Ray cultivated with Chrissy Hynde.. Photos are the memem. of our lives

It's actually not intended as a holiday song, but Ray's musing on how the 2012 Olympics will change the London he loves, in terms of the economics and its effect on the residents around the area. He's said he hopes the people can still afford to live there. Regardless it's a beautiful song.
