You could not have misunderstood the song any deeply than you did. It's about a son saying goodbye to his already deceased dad. It's evident by the sad lyrics that the son wasn't there with him when his dad died, and this is a very touching and candid eulogy, so beautiful it could only have been written by Randy Newman.10 years ago
