From his 1972 album "Sail Away" - an absolute classic.

Lyrics:

Everyone has gone away

Can you hear me? Can you hear me?

No one cared enough to stay

Can you hear me? Can you hear me?

You must remember me old man

I know that you can if you try

So just open up your eyes, old man

Look who's come to say goodbye

The sun has left the sky, old man

The birds have flown away

And no one came to cry old man

Goodbye, old man, goodbye

You want to stay, I know you do

But it ain't no use to try

'Cause I'll be here-and I'm just like you

Goodbye, old man, goodbye

Won't be no God to comfort you

You taught me not to believe that lie

You don't need anybody

Nobody needs you

Don't cry, old man, don't cry

Everybody dies

Don't you just hate people that talk to themselves?

I always thought of RN as a novelty composer until one of my advanced piano students brought in a music book of many of his songs. That's when I realized what a serious musician this guy is.

the vanity of the cunts below trying to work out the meaning of the song - hilarious

I'd say for the studio work on Sail Away, perhaps put on your earphones. Newman sings in a sensitive manner. Unless your hearing is perfect now. Which it could be at your age.

It's compassionate AND nasty. Part of Randy's genius. He sees both sides of it.

This song is a punch in the gut. One of the saddest way to simply say goodbye to a father who raised a son without faith.

It saddens ME that you're choosing to read it in such a malicious way? 'You want to stay, I know you do, it ain't no use to try...' why does this have to be him telling his dad to leave sooner? Why can't it be him accepting the inevitability of death? 'Won't be no god to comfort you/you taught me not to believe that lie...' why is this spiteful? Why is this not a lament?Honestly you get very high and mighty and keep referring back to the text, but you didn't seem to read it very close yourself.

Randy's saying that he's just like him not because he wants to replace him but because he's worthless and obstinate as well. It's depressing, not cruel.

From the lyrics I always pictured the old man as being in a dying condition not already deceased. The fact that the lyrics are sad would work in either case.

Well, the only differences between the way I read the song and the way you did(if you did) were the speed and maybe any mistakes one of us made. However, I believe you meant to say "to your... [understanding] of this song...." There are several differences between our two philosophies. Thank you, sir.

Not to say that I don't like the song.

You talk about sad lyrics, but you miss the main point: "You want to stay. I know you do, but it ain't no use to try. 'Cause I'll be here and I'm just like you.... Won't be no God to comfort you; you taught me not to believe that lie... Nobody needs you... Everybody dies,." It saddens me that you can't read the lyrics that you copied and pasted. Also, be sure to search for the album cover of Sail Away in which he sharpens his nails with a butcher knife.

You could not have misunderstood the song any deeply than you did. It's about a son saying goodbye to his already deceased dad. It's evident by the sad lyrics that the son wasn't there with him when his dad died, and this is a very touching and candid eulogy, so beautiful it could only have been written by Randy Newman.

Creepy song - horrid and udly lyrics. Do you not understand that he is telling his father that he needs not life because Randy can replace him; Randy is telling his dad to die with more haste.

Brilliant song. Painful and honest lyrics.
