Randy Newman - I Miss You - #10 from the album "Bad Love" (Dreamworks 1999). One of his most beautiful and personal songs yet. Heartwrenching.

What made the songs special is what has always made Newman special: deep down, he means it. Newman's ironies, even his one-liners, don't always go down easy because he's willing to become these disreputable people, so much so that you wonder whether he's kidding in the first place.

This is an unplugged version of "I Miss You", special recorded for "2 meter sessies". If you want to buy this version: http://bit.ly/njphyw.

"Bad Love" is the tenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Randy Newman released 1999. It was Newman's first solo album since 1988s Land of Dreams and followed an 11-year hiatus during which Newman had focused on film soundtracks, receiving several Academy Award nominations.

Lyrics:

Still in my heart after all these years

separated by time now by distance

I couldn't allow myself to feel the loss that I feel right now

you're far away and happy I know

it's a little bit late... twenty years or so

it's a little bit cold for all those concerned

but I'd sell my soul and your soul for a song

so I'll pour my heart out

I miss you

I miss you, I'm sorry but I do

I want to thank you for the good years

and apologize for the rough ones

you must be laughing yourself sick

but I wanted to write you one before I quit

and this one's it

I miss you, I wanted you to know

I miss you, and I still love you so.

Don't know why they can't get the lyrics about Idaho etc right. But this is a very touching performance. Anybody know who Randy might be writing about? Usually in his songs he plays characters, but I don't get that feeling here. I feel like he's really writing to someone from 20 years ago, who is now in Idaho. Any info?

Over 20 years ago, I lost track of my high school love, my heart, we recently found each other again, she is married, and has a beautiful young boy, between the two of us it is like nothing changed I never stopped loving and it effeced every relationship I ever had, it's killing me, and this feels he was following me around

One line was forgotten among the lyrics: After the words "...laughing yourself sick" come the words, "up there in Idaho".
