Apparently Ralph McTell wrote this song for "The Fureys" after they met in Germany. It is hugely popular in Ireland, and probably one of Ralph McTell's best-known songs.

Does anyone know what year Ralph was singing at this club? Name and city of the club too?

I agree with Bjowolf. Don't recall 'written for Fureys' story but think I remember hearing him mention a guy he used to work with, way back, in a timber yard using the expression during a lunch break...

Well, as a matter of fact, the Fureys used to tell the story of how they lent Ralph their PA system and instead of money they asked for a song and it was this one.

Btw. I am pretty sure Ralph didn't write it for the Fureys, since his version appeared first on "Right Side Up" (1976). But the Fureys heard it ( via somone else, I believe ) and then recorded it on their 1977 album "Emigrant" - at a much faster pace ;-)
