"Rainy Days and Mondays" is a 1971 song by The Carpenters that went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified Gold by the RIAA. It was also the duo's fourth #1 song on the Adult Contemporary singles chart. However, the song failed to chart in the United Kingdom until it went to #63 in a reissue there in 1993.

The song was composed in 1971 by Roger Nichols and Paul Williams. It was released as the first track on the album Carpenters. The B-side on the single is "Saturday."

About Paul Williams

Williams is responsible for a number of enduring pop hits from the 1970s, including several hits for Three Dog Night (such as "An Old Fashioned Love Song", "The Family of Man", and "Out in the Country"), Helen Reddy ("You and Me Against the World"), and The Carpenters, most notably "Rainy Days and Mondays," "I Won't Last a Day Without You," and "We've Only Just Begun", which has since become a cover-band standard and de rigueur for weddings throughout North America. (This last was originally a song for a Crocker National Bank television commercial featuring newlyweds.) An early collaboration with Roger Nichols, "Someday Man", was covered by The Monkees (a group for which he auditioned but was not cast) on a 1969 single, and was the first Monkees' release not published by Screen Gems. Bobby Sherman also sang "Cried Like a Baby". Anne Murray sang "Talk It Over in the Morning". He also wrote the cantata Wings with music by Michel Colombier.

A frequent cowriter of Williams was musician Kenneth Ascher; their songs together included the popular children's favorite "Rainbow Connection", sung by Kermit the Frog in The Muppet Movie. Williams also collaborated with Biff Rose, notably on the song "Fill Your Heart", originally recorded by Tiny Tim as the B-side of his 1968 hit "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" and subsequently covered by David Bowie on his album Hunky Dory. Most recently, he collaborated with Scissor Sisters on their second album, Ta-Dah and contributed lyrics to Richard Barone's 2010 album Glow. He first was a part of a short lived rock group called "Holy Mackerel".

Williams has worked on the music of a number of films, including writing and singing on Phantom of the Paradise (in which he also starred and earned an Oscar nomination for the music) and Bugsy Malone. He contributed lyrics to the song You're So Nice to Be Around with music by John Williams, and it earned them a Oscar nomination. Along with Kenneth Ascher and Rupert Holmes, they wrote the music and lyrics to A Star Is Born, with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. The bittersweet love ballad, "Evergreen", from the movie won the Academy Award for Best Song of The Year.

He is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame,[and his songs have been performed by both pop and country music artists. He has won one Academy Award for best song (Evergreen) from A Star Is Born (co-written by the artist who performed it, Barbra Streisand) and has been nominated for several others.

He wrote the music for a musical production of Happy Days that debuted in 2007.

In April 2009, Williams was elected President and Chairman of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Rainy Days and Mondays - Lyric

Talkin' to myself and feelin' old

Sometimes I'd like to quit

Nothin' ever seems to fit

Hangin' around

Nothin' to do but frown

Rainy days and Mondays

Always get me down

What I've got they used to call the blues

Nothin' is really wrong

Feelin' like I don't belong

Walkin' around

Some kind of lonely clown

Rainy days and Mondays

Always get me down

Funny but it seems

I always wind up here with you

Nice to know somebody loves me

Funny but it seems it's the only thing to do

Run and find the one who loves me

What I feel has come and gone before

No need to talk it out

We know what it's all about

Hangin' around

Nothin' to do but frown

Rainy days and Mondays

Always get me down

started listening to music at a really very young age. I'm like 5 or 6 and i put on vinyl records and play anything from LED Zeppelin to the Carpenters.... in between there's Paul Williams and a host of other artist from 60's standards to Soul , R&B and funk to POP even Disco until New Wave came and its `cassette time.... I love Pauls Music...its soothing and i did not even know the meaning of that word but thats what i felt at that time......... I got lost a bit when my Big brother fucked up our stereo/record player but the internet brought back the awesome feeling of listening to those wonderful songs again.... so to everybody who cares (was that a song?) Thanks a whole lot....

Interesting. Never heard this before. I know he originally wrote it but never knew he actually recorded it himself. IMO, I think it's in the same vain as Herb Alpert's "This Guys In Love" or Richard Harris' "Macarthur's Park" While the singers on those songs weren't particularly good (subjective), they were able to emote the lyrics in a way that it didn't matter. You still feel it. At the end of the day though, I still prefer the Carpenters version but that's just my opinion

Thank you so much, both for the song and the wonderful information in the 'about' - much of which I knew as a long time PW fan, but loaded with gems that were new to me!

Paul Williams has not been given the notoriety and accolades for his great talent in vocals . song writing and being an all around good person.
