Rainer Ptacek was a celebrated German-born, Arizona-based singer/slide guitarist, and one of the original members of Giant Sand with Howe Gelb.

Such was his respected influence upon those who heard his music that when he was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in 1996 the range of artists who rallied round to help contribute towards his medical bills - by means of a charity record - were as diverse as PJ Harvey, Emmylou Harris, Evan Dando, and Jimmy Page.

He bravely fought his illness only for it to tragically return in October the following year. Rainer died 3 weeks later on November 12th 1997.

He was just 46 years old.

This track ('The Farm') comes from the Rainer album 'Live At The Performance Center' released posthumously in 2001 on the Glitterhouse label.

Never knew he had died. I bought Worried Spirits back in 1992 while at University. Loved "Tasted Better Going Down". What a shame great musicians pass away at such a young age.

Just read that Rainer has passed on a few years back. I'm sad about that and this song seems appropriate for the moment. Thanks for all the great shows in Tucson I got to see you at Rainer.

@butterfllygurl It's the way his voice cracks a little that seems to add to the poignancy of it for me.
