I don't normally do this, but this is such a good song I had to.

I do not own the rights to this song.

No, it's not. Anne Briggs just did her own version of it like everybody else. It's an old traditional song. There are many versions of it. But it's most commonly known as "Railroad bill".

Hey, guys -- folkies aren't investment bankers. You can buy an mp3 or other format on Gillian Welch's website gillianwelch[dot]com for a mere $1.29 I agree that it's a beautiful rendition of a great old song.

This is actually called Ride Ride by Anne Briggs. Look her up. Gorgeous song. And Gillian makes it wonderfully her own. Gillian's recording I think can be found on her website.

There's many versions of this song since it's so old. The only thing that stays the same is the chorus.

@briansmith92064, the origins of the song are actually much earlier: it may or may not have been based on a legendary "Robin Hood" [black or white, according to the legend] who gained the handle "Railroad Bill" late in the 1800s. Versions of the lyrics date back to the early 1900s. Ms. Briggs, working from lyrics and legend, composed her own version -- but she did NOT originate the song. It's a genuine "folk song."
