Second single from "Amnesiac" (2001), by Radiohead.

Directed by Michel Gondry.

This video has a very low quality because it was uploaded long before YouTube has the HIGH QUALITY feature. If you want a better quality video, check out this link:

The whole video was shot in one take in the same set (quite remarkable considering the scene changes required).

Director Michel Gondry said the video was autobiographical, about himself and a girlfriend once he had. However, Thom Yorke said the lyrics were about cannibalism.

This video features Emma de Caunes as Thom's girlfriend.

The video tryed to interpret the surreal imagery and fit it with the song lyrics. Nevertheless, Radiohead vetoed this video from the Director's DVD release because it was about Gondry's personal life and loosely based on the song.

The song was developed during the 18-month Kid A and Amnesiac sessions, and it is legendary for supposedly "having taken 373 days to record". Although "Knives Out" is not similar to Radiohead's earlier rock style as featured on The Bends (1995), it is usually noted as one of the most traditional guitar songs the band has done since 2000.

L Y R I C S

I want you to know

He's not coming back

Look into my eyes

I'm not coming back

So knives out

Catch the mouse

Don't look down

Shove it in your mouth

If you'd been a dog

They would've drowned you at birth

Look into my eyes

It's the only way you'll know I'm telling the truth

So knives out

Cook him up

Squash his head

Put him in the pot

I want you to know

He's not coming back

He's bloated and frozen

Still there's no point in letting it go to waste

So knives out

Catch the mouse

Squash his head

Put him in the pot

@ BillyChangAndWoodi It's one of my faves too I don't think it's directly about cannibalism. To me it uses a cat & mouse metaphor that leads two two conclusions. One is human cannibalism, just for the disturbing theme and mood, and one is a interrelationship consuming destruction.

@BillyChangAndWoodi I ate my neighboor's son to stay alive during a blizzard in 2001. 9 years later and I still have nightmares about it.

All the so-called music lovers, who just want "everyone to stop arguing and just enjoy the music," must stop inculcating their assumption that "all music is equal" to the unwitting majority. It simply is not. Music criticism begins with this realization. Eventually, we must be able to say that Coldplay is better than Radiohead or Radiohead better than Coldplay. When we just throw up our hands before the idol of our "enjoyment", we all lose.

This is one of their best videos. I know Radiohead don't like it which is a shame. I know this isn't a love song but it's awesome how the whole thing is done in one shot.

@jirdimaster not sure about that - genius and mental disturbance, i.e., bipolar disorder, and often linked, not usually depression -- and it could be argued that it's a given that athe world is ultimately depressing since we all die eventually; so anyone who writes happy music is only trying to enjoy the time he has left, and to encourage others to feel the same. Why not dance while we can? Nothing changes but our experience of life, but that's enough -

@tmprogram That's what makes it so great, happy music is always inferior, genius and depression are very closely linked

IMHO, this video is VERY reminiscent of Tom Petty's clip for "Don't Come Around Here No More" - like an Alice in Wonderland-ish nightmare.
