en el contexto del album ok computer, de radiohead, esta "cancion", es genial, muy similar a revolution number 9, de los beatles, en cuanto al sonido y el relato.

It sucks that there are people out there who listen to this and can't even grasp a thread of what this track means. "no chance of escape"

Sadly, this is where all of us in the western world are headed, drugged on social [and medical] antibiotics, doomed to live a completely sterile life, no drama, straight jackets, bland, run-of-the-mill, androids with one in hand and without a soul.

To me, this song symbolizes the end of our youth and the beginning of the cold adulthood imposed by today's society. The part of "shot of baby strapped in backseat" would be the death of our own childhood. That moment when we won't have dreams and hopes for the future anymore, still getting frustrated by the injustices going on in the world but won't do anything, as we had no choice anymore. This song is my favorite of all time, because it makes me shiver every time I listen to it.

"Is it better for a man to have chosen evil than to have good imposed upon him"- Anthony Burgess To have no right to choose between what we perceive as good and evil robs us of the status of being creatures of morality. What value is a well done job if the subject has never gotten the chance to exercise choice, make mistakes and then learn from them, at this moment he is not performing any task but instead is a vacuous robotic entity. There is no escape, even in a alternative group one must hold the ideals of that group to belong.Whose to say we are not all vacuous creatures mindlessly criticizing other people's qualities because subconsciously we desire conformity. We all perform such acts, it would be egocentric to think otherwise. We can only enjoy the lives we live because there is no moral purity. We all consume matter from living beings to live. We have all subconsciously or consciously offended or hurt someone. Just cherish your delusions of uniqueness and....enjoy radiohead

to me, this song is about being on anti-depressants. these damn pills turn you into a robot, emotionless 24/7. sure you're not psychotic losing your mind anymore, but you're empty. without those feelings, you're nothing.

Interesting reading different interpretations of the lyrics. For me it's always been about rules and conformity stifling the average, 'normal' person (most of society). On the one hand they're an 'empowered and informed member of society' that plays by the rules, does the 'right things' and doesn't let their emotions get the better of them, like the things mentioned in the song are ideals we're supposed to aspire to as a people.Yet the sting at the end (which is obviously coming considering both the music and it being Radiohead) is that all these 'ideals' basically strip humans of their humanity and individuality, to the point where their little more than functioning vegetables (or imprisoned artificially-functioning animals), devoid of the ability (or desire) to see their predicament and/or act on it).

Are people even coherent when listening to music anymore? I know this track isn't exactly music-driven, but do any of you actually digest and think about what it means? No, because our education system tricks us into thinking that memorizing words from a book and remembering them for a quiz makes us intelligent.

The last line explains the whole thing. I think this is about a person on anti-depressants or anti-psychotics who is able to function and do the things that normal people are supposed to do, but the person realizes that it's all chemicals.
