At the First Night of the 2000 BBC Promenade Concerts in London's Royal Albert Hall, Evgeny Kissin played Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto and followed it with this stunning encore, the same composer's Prelude in G minor. It is No. 5 in Rachmaninov's Opus 23 set of 10 Preludes, dating from 1901.

He doesn't have to introduce the piece! Other pianists don't do that.

Honestly, it sounds a bit rushed, and sometimes even too light in some of the brighter and more exciting parts. I prefer Gilels's version to the rest, he has a richer tone and plays the piece at a more relaxed pace, it doesn't feel like Gilels is trying to run away from something, it feels like he's in control of the piece.

What kind of piano is that? It sounds really mellow, and I think this piece would sound better with a brighter sounding instrument. Can't wait to see Kissin perform in Chicago this April!
