Orthodox music has such a sense of loss and yearning that you just don't see in Western Christian music. Stunning.

I realised after ten minutes or so that one of the other Vespers was playing in another tab. Genuinely did not notice. It works really well actually - think i'll crank it up to three tabs.

I find Rachmaninov's Liturgical works simply incredible. Many have tried their hand at the liturgy, and most tend to alter it in ways that yield something beautiful, but none the less too different to be deemed a continuation of the holy tradition. This, however, maintains the spirit of the Liturgy in full, while altering the outside forms. Masterful and timeless beauty.

The Lord executes mercy and justice for all who are oppressed. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Glory to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies you with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

This afternoon I visited the the Church of the Orthodox Patriarchate in Constantinople (Istanbul) and was moved by the Icons and the "mystical" atmosphere of the interior. This music reminds me of the Icons, the smell of incense, the golden Iconastasis, and the general atmosphere of sanctity.

Should've stuck with Byzantine melodies, or at least Valaam chant, znamenny isn't half bad either.
