12/26/1979 AT THE HAMMERSMITH ODEON IN LONDON, ENGALND

Lyrics:

In the year of '39 assembled here the Volunteers

In the days when lands were few

Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn

The sweetest sight ever seen.

And the night followed day

And the story tellers say

That the score brave souls inside

For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas

Ne'er looked back, never feared, never cried.

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away

Don't you hear me calling you

Write your letters in the sand

For the day I take your hand

In the land that our grandchildren knew.

In the year of '39 came a ship in from the blue

The volunteers came home that day

And they bring good news of a world so newly born

Though their hearts so heavily weigh

For the earth is old and grey,

to a new home we'll away

But my love this cannot be

For so many years have gone though I'm older but a year

Your mother's eyes in your eyes cry to me.

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away

Don't you hear me calling you

All the letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand

For my life

Still ahead

Pity Me.

One of my all-time favorite Queen songs. Which is saying something! I do prefer Brian's voice for this one, but Freddie brings his own zest to it. No surprise :-).

Brian being polite saying this version does not sound like it does on the record - that's because on the record Freddie doesn't sing it. on here he dominates and ruins it. Sorry Freddie, love you to bits but on here you should have sat it out, it wasn't your song - Brian was being too much a gent.

why roger taylor is not participating in doing the high notes?

Boy blunder

They get freddie to sing it live because guess what? He's a better live singer. Some of the comments here are completely idiotic.

There is a sense of Freddie not giving a fuck..... Perhaps a recognition of his minimal imput to the song. The derogatory 'all yours'.... whilst essentially giving Brian the middle finger, says a lot.....I've not the seen the whole concert... But if Brian stood up, flopped it out, during the build up, and climax to 'Somebody To Love'.........Then told Freddie to suck his dick...... I doubt I'd be surprised.......

this should have been a number 1 single...record management made a big mistake by not releasing this one as a single. harmonies are terrific. I love story songs. this is one of their best.

i'm sure they felt Freddie's powerful voice would carry better " live" back then..but I agree on this folk song, brian's softer more emotional tones seem to sound better

I prefer Dr. May's version 'cause it's so sad and emotional, you would really 'pity him'. But Freddie's version was good too.

Good but I felt like Freddie rushed it and that Roger barely sang... I at least didn't hear him
