So there you go, to the annoyance of Jarv's dad, Joe Cocker is no relation.

I feel the need to comment on here to say that; A this song is ace and Jarv is a legend, and B Jarvis Cockers dad is not Joe Cocker, although his dad did know Joe and in fact he used to babysit Jarv. Jarv's dad fucked off to Australia when he was 7 and carried on the pretence that he was in fact Joe Cocker's brother. This isn't true either. Jarv's dad got in touch with the News Of The World after Different Class with the usual sob story about wanting to get in touch and Jarv visited him in Oz.

Kind of unsettling lyrics, yes (do a search on "pulp little girl with blue eyes" and you'll find them at mp3 lyrics) that have the feel of a Scott Walker song.

This song is super sad.For so many reasons. For Jarvis to write a song about his dead beat dad.(my intuitions say its Joe Cocker) then to be able to sing about him skipping out is so strong and powerful. The look of sadness on his face as he picks up the babydoll (baby jarvis) So sad.

This was the first Pulp song i heard, at the age of 12. I was sneaking around my sister's room and stole a homebrewed cassette from her dressing table. The tracks i remember are: Stiff Little Fingers - Alternative Ulster Pistols - Bodies Tenpole Tudor -Swords of a Thousand Men Adam and the Ants - Ant Music Pulp - Little Girl with Blue Eyes Breeders - Cannonball Where is my Mind - Pixies Debaser - Pixies The music that i heard on that cassette opened my eyes to what music could be.

insert another "that" between "lyrics" and "express" and my comment will make marginally more sense.

I agree with you , JJ, but what makes this song (what I consider to be) good is that the lyrics express that sentiment sound a bit racy...with a lot of Pulp songs I've heard, it's the juxtaposition of, how can I say, "nice" emotions and sentiments with filthy, almost depraved lyrics. You are totally right, I think, about what this song means, but you have to admit the way it's said is a bit dirty. Which is what makes Jarvis Cocker a great lyricist, in my opinion.

In the beginning, the way he holds the microphone makes me laugh, between two fingers :D You're so original Jarvis :D
