London Can Take It by Public Service Broadcasting.

The second track from the EP 'The War Room', London Can Take It is adapted from a 1941 film filed by an American war correspondent, Quentin Reynolds, about the Blitz.

Footage from 'London Can Take It' is copyright BFI National Archive / COI and is used with kind permission.

J. Willgoose, Esq. and Wrigglesworth sample old public information films and archive material and set them to new music. Live, the films are screened simultaneously as laptops are fiddled with, drums are pounded, theremins are wafted at, guitars are bashed and banjos furiously plucked. Teaching the lessons of the past through the music of the future.

Now it’s eight o’clockJerry is a little bit late tonightThe dusk is deepeningSoon the nightly battle of London will be onThis has been a quiet day for us, but it won’t be a quiet nightThe searchlights are in positionThe guns are readyThe people’s army of volunteers is readyThey are the ones who are really fighting this warBrokers, Clerks, Peddlers, Merchants by dayThey are heroes by nightThese are not Hollywood sound effectsThis is the music they play every night in LondonThe symphony of warLondon can take itLondon can take itLondon raises her head, shakes the debris of a night from her hair, and takes stock of the damage doneThe sign of a great fighter in the ring is: can he get up from the floor after being knocked downLondon does this every morningThere is no panic, no fear, no despair, in London TownLondon can take itLondon can take itThe night is long, but sooner or later the dawn will come

I just love these guys. They are innovative, clever and with a sly British humour that harms no one. I could listen to them all day long. Genius. Can't wait to see them, but I live in China so don't think they'll make it here.

Brilliant. Humphrey Jennings was a genius. I can't believe everyone in the UK knows about Goebbels but no-one's heard of Humphrey Jennings. You should all watch Listen to Britain he made in 1942 (London can take it was made in 1940). Best propaganda film ever imo, yet has no narration or interviews. Just the sounds of Britain. PSB used footage from that in some of their other vids like Waltz for George. So check out Jennings' stuff on youtube - well worth watching. You'll love it.The 1945 Diary for Timothy is amazing too. It's basically telling everyone to vote labour as we deserved to be rewarded for winning the war. It's mad to think that the Ministry of Information was allowed to make and release that while Churchill was PM.This has become my current fave song, and if you like these PSB songs, you'll like the original docs.Share and Enjoy.
