they didnt invent it at all. Neither did slint, or big black or bastro... but maybe these guys did: v=5mBdxxXNPf0 especially the chord progression around 1:15+ repeated at 2:13+ -- totally Polvoesque. Even the slow segments. Or Polvo is Red Crayola-esque :) Hell their late 60's track Hurricane Fighterplane is kinda post-punky (Wire style, not polvo). Even segments of early Rush are proto-mathrock. Check out the machine-gun riff segment of Fountain of Lamneth on 1974's Caress of Steel.
