How is it that someone can sing a song like that and sound the same way in 2012 as they did in 1982?

John Elefante needs to join up with the band MEDALLION, they would be fantastic together! Medallion has some fantastic musicians.

I thought "this sounds like crap" until he started singing.........Holy Fuck! That is a great singer!

He sounds better than ever- his voice has gotten richer than when he was young. Even though he had a sky-high range, his tone was a little reedy and (sorry to say) whiny. Now he sounds considerably deeper and fuller, more like young Steve Walsh- and that is about the highest compliment I could pay a vocalist :D Nice job, John.

People talking about Steve Walsh leaving Kansas 6 months ago. Walsh is done at the end of this month. Facebook groups discussing who should step in. John, Billy Greer, or others.

He will never go back to Kansas, he has moved on. I have heard Kansas many times with Steve but not with John but I met John when he had his band Mastedon. I have heard him sing almost acapella standing about three feet from me. He was/is a far better singer than Walsh but Walsh was a far better keyboardist than he was. The band was still playing with Steve last I heard. Steve can't reach some of the high notes anymore so some new people do that for him in backup. The guy got old but he is still very talented.

I've noticed, though, that Steve, since rejoining the band after John left, has continually sang some of the songs John had written while with Kansas, like "Fight Fire with Fire."

Steve wrote this song. So it's his "baby." There's no way Steve would ever allow John to sing this particular song with kansas, without quitting. I doubt he'd allow John to even sing any lead part, as terrible as Steve's voice is sounding right now. Steve would leave the band first.

I would agree. Steve's voice is shot now. Have John as singer and Steve on keyboard.

please reform Kansas with elefante as singer.

I love the end of the song Defying Gravity, the vocals etc. Probably my favorite JE solo track of them all. However,I think the Revolution of Mind cd (Mastedon 3 as my import copy is billed) if BY FAR the pinnacle of his career, and that includes anything he's ever done. If you have not yet heard that cd,buy without hesitation!!! Also new cd coming in may called "On My way To The Sun" !! Stay tuned....

Nice to hear John sing this song.

You're right. The original version was loaded with keyboards--organ, piano, and various synthesizers. In fact, it required 2 keyboard players to play all the parts.

You're definitely right about that ... Steve Walsh's voice is nothing like it used to be. In contrast, John's voice has steadily improved over the years with "Defying Gravity" being the pinnacle of his career. No doubt clean living has helped keep John's voice in peak condition, but in fairness to Steve Walsh, he hasn't performed 100+ live shows a year like Walsh has done most of his life. When both of them were at their peak, Steve was the best singer on the planet, and John was a close 2nd.

It needs a fat sounding keyboard. JE has done a great job preserving his voice. Chalk that up to clean living right?
