I think it's more that humans are social creatures and the more popular something is often times means the more popular something becomes. Things snowball like that. Also, genre lines and labeling something as good or bad simply based on its genre is another way of getting stuck in a niche and missing out on good stuff. It goes both ways. Alternative listeners often don't listen to anything outside their box and miss out on decent things just like pop/rap listeners do with other genres.
