This exercise will help any guitar player wanting to play outside in a jazz fusion improvisation in the style of fusion players such as Guthrie Govan or Greg Howe.

The idea is to mentally prepare every note you play by visualizing the fretboard before hitting the notes.

Good insight, as always. I would encourage you to turn off the background music when talking/teaching. Too distracting for lessons sake. Salute!

Outside playing is all about outlining chords OTHER than the one(s) that are sounding in the background. The Nicolas Slonimsky Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns is a great source of ideas which waver in and out of tonality. I'm not a fan of purely random chromatic stuff. The great horn players like Mike Brecker, Joe Farrell, and John Coltane showed us the way.

Thanks I enjoyed this lesson. For I had problems playing a note and looking at that note and not looking at the next note where I might play next for that is habit of mines I have to get rid of.

@highintel The biggest thing is rhythm. Having a strong rhythm motif will help. You should come to my Rhythm Phrasing Masterclass on the 28th. See guitarplayback(dot)com for more info...

I sound like shit when I do it. Thank you for this lesson though. I am wondering if there are any rules like never start slipping on the ONE beat or never resolve on the TWO...etc... ?

@merseyguy1974 the idea of playing outside isnt really to play a random note, but rather play in a specific rhythm like a drummer would do.
