This song has always hit home with me because of the beautiful metaphors. Most recently, getting cheated on by someone I thought I had a great relationship with. You can try to stay strong but sometimes theres no way to make the ship float

Obviously It's a double meaning, love can be a ship wreck metaphorically. You can try to stay afloat but it is sometimes just a ship wreck. You can love someone who is bad for you (need you like water in my lungs) sometimes in a relationship you think is going well can suddenly go downhill (they call em rogues.... You'll always get hit out of nowhere end up on your own)

My father would fish out of Montauk Point with some friends. They always got on The Pelican, the boat being referred to in this song. he recalls that you could fish the whole way around boat and is why they preferred it to others. The first time my father told me this story the hair on my neck stood up.The Saturday it sank, September 1, 1951, he and my grandfather (his father in law who was visiting my mom and dad for the labor Day weekend) drove out to Montauk early. they got there before the train known as the Fisherman Special arrived from NYC. As I understand it there was a gate across the dock that lead to the boats that did not open until the train arrived. Since they were early they were at the gate and pretty much assured to get on board. When the train pulled in apparently there was always a mad scramble as fishermen ran to get on boats from wish they liked to fish. The train pulled in, the gate opened and as they were starting down the dock my father dropped his tackle box. My grandfather was standing looking at him like any father in law would after such a mistake. they missed the Pelican and ended up on the Rex.When the storms that day came up, The Rex made it back in. They went and got some chowder before starting to drive home. It was late in the day when they were back in the car and heard the news about the Pelican capsizing. My dad said they were just shocked at what they heard and didn't say a word just driving home in complete silence.

Your tongue is a rudder. It steers the whole ship.Sends your words past your lips or keeps them safe behind your teeth. But the wrong words will strand you.Come off course while you sleep.Sweep your boat out to sea or dashed to bits on the reef. The vessel groans the ocean pressures its frame. To the port I see the lighthouse through the sleet and rain. And I wish for one more day to give my love and repay debts. But the morning finds our bodies washed up thirty miles west....THIS IS THE END.

This is a beautiful song and can symbolize many things. It makes me sad but I love it anyway. I think of my son and his memory always brings a tear and then....after a while, a smile, for he brought love and joy to my life and taught me to look at things in new way and he left me that gift. 'Til we meet again my sweet boy! Race you to the ocean! R.I.P. Aaron 1985-2014

this song is about a ship wreck in 1951 at montauk point, new york where 45 people lost their lives within a mile of the lighthouse there.. (the band is from long island new york but im sure can interpreted into other meanings to suit the listener)
