CLIFFS OF DOONEEN LYRICS

You may travel far far from your own native home

Far away oer the mountains far away oer the foam

But of all the fine places that I've ever seen,

There's none to compare with The Cliffs of Dooneen

Take a view oer the mountains fine sights you'll see there

You'll see the high rocky mountains on the West coast of Clare

The towns of Kilkee and Kilrush can be seen

From the high rocky slopes at The Cliffs of Dooneen

Its a nice place to be on a fine Summer's day

Watching all the wild flowers that ne'er do decay

The hare and lofty pheasant are plain to be seen

Making homes for their young round The Cliffs of Dooneen

Fare thee well to Dooneen fare thee well for a while

And to all the fine people I'm leaving behind

To the streams and the meadows where late I have been

And the high rocky slopes of The Cliffs of Dooneen

This is one of my all time favourite Irish songs, with great lyrics, and it is beautifully sung by the legendary Christy Moore & Planxty. Christy comes from County Kildare and is one of Ireland's finest singers. The playing is just amazing on this also. The song has a very nice melody, and was written by Jack McAuliffe from Lixnaw, County Kerry. This video is from Planxty's fantastic reunion concert of 2004, in Vicar Street, Dublin. Many thanks to cameraman32 for uploading this awesome video. Enjoy this beautiful song !

Planxty -Christy Moore - Cliffs of Dooneen. Can any one pull heart strings like the Irish?

This is a beautiful song but would be better if Mr Moore had been true to the original poem. It was originally written as "The cliffs of Moveen" Moveen is a village just outside of Kilkee, Co Clare but was written over 100 years ago so Mr Moore could change the words. Such a shame really.

Fantastic:- this version from Planxty would tickle the deepest corner of a yearning heart, whether you happen to be Irish or otherwise, you'd miss those cliffs after listening to that set of wailing uileann pipes... mysterious, melancholic, beautiful, ...thank you Planxty, thank you Christy.

Our equivalent to Dame Judy Dench. The beauty of his voice has diminished a little without the 15 pints of stout but he remains a national treasure.

It means "elbow pipes". Watch Planxty. You'll see the piper seated playing the pipes. These are very difficult to master, but more Irish than the Scots' traditional bagpipes.
