I am surprised to hear lack of good breath control in this recording. A lack of clarity in some of the runs is another surprise. The restrictions of Placido's instrument is a given that nothing can help. However, I have heard him perform technically better than this.

superb of course. But strangely I prefer the version by Heddle Nash from the 1930s, even though it's on a scratchy old 78 disc (you can easily find it elsewhere on Youtube). It's somehow firmer, more committed, more powerful. And on the purely technical and recording production side I find the sound balance in this Placido rendition rather irritating - sometimes the orchestra seems to swamp his fine voice. But who am I to criticise? Thanks anyway for sharing your passion!

@Patrick Boyle, Domingo has a hard time letting go. He is attempting baritone roles now... Conte di Luna from "Il Trovatore", Giorgio Germont from "La Traviata" and Rigoletto? Pavarotti knew when to back off. My intention is not to bash Domingo, because he is a great name in the world of opera. Pavarotti had also a better technique. Domingo admited himself that he got great help from his wife regarding the technical part of singing. Now to get on topic, I find Domingo's rendition more pleasing than the one of Juan Diego Florez, it is only a matter of personal taste though, as they both are different voices.

As Domingo is a far more complete musician than Lucy ever was it only stand to reason that he has a better technique and indeed taste. Domingo reads music, plays piano and conducts as well as singing, things Pavarotti could never do.

I truly love both artists. I would agree that Pavarotti was vocally superior, but for me the passion/interpretation is more important than the technique. Same reason I love Callas - her voice wasn't the greatest, but she is unsurpassed in conveying emotion when she sang. She gets me right in the heart.

Sorry but you guys keep forgetting about the grand master of tenor arias, even before Pavarotti or Domingo. McCormack sings this in the proper style. That's what he was famous for! hence the title "Grand Master" He sang authentically
