A new 'Private Remaster'...

What a good album... Brutal, aggressive, abrasive are some words... but damn, it was mastered so quietly!

Yeah, dynamic range is a nice thing but the levels this album was originally mastered meant I rarely listened to it, especially when out and about because I couldn't get my iPod loud enough to drown out the whir and hubbub of the buses I'm usually on!

So here it is. It is anything but brickwalled. I HATE digital clipping, it's ruined so many albums I love... again, the opposite problem to what I was saying about the original "Rid Of Me" CD, but the same after-effect, music that I love but rarely want to listen to.

I had a careful look over the waveforms, decided what levels to work with and used as minimal compression possible to get the levels to a more suitable point. I can't hear any problems with digital clipping and I've already replaced the original CD with this one on my iPod!

Enjoy! And remember, buy the original, support your favourite bands and musicians!

I'm amazed that nearly 20 years later this song is kicking my ass! Discovering P J Harvey for the first time and I love this period because it's so raw and powerful. So much talent, so much passion, and so ready to put it all out there! WOW!

Ever since I heard the drum intro on "Bone Machine" by the Pixies I became a huge, huge fan of Steve Albini's methods and results. I had never heard drums recorded as bombastically, it just sounded like sheer power, just as most drums should. I certainly never had any issues with the mix of the album, only the quiet mastering levels (of course, just turn it up if you're at home, but on my iPod, being subject to EU volume limits, I couldn't enjoy this album when out and about).

I never had a problem with the way this album was mixed. Albini's productions have a raw feel which really brings out the "true" sound of the bands he produces. Sonically, it is as if he strips them naked. And that is exactly what this album exudes: pure, naked emotion and energy.

"People read things in and make him what they want him to be," Harvey said. "He's the only other person I know that that happens to besides myself. People have a very specific idea of what I am- some kind of ax-wielding, man-eating Vampira- and I'm not that at all. I'm almost the complete opposite."

Harvey herself was pleased with the end result. "I do everything for myself primarily," she said, "and I was happy with it. I don’t really listen when people say good things about my work because I tend to not give myself praise about anything. But I was really pleased with Rid of Me. For that period of my life, it was perfect. Well, it wasn’t perfect but as near to as I could get at that time".[5] She remained friends with Albini afterward, finding in him a kindred spirit.

Actually, it seems that it was more reviewers that couldn't handle the abrasive sound of the album and some websites have misinterpreted those views to Polly herself.

I really want to read about it... I can't guess why she wasn't happy with the result...

Thanks so much for this! This is just what I needed. Is there a possibility you could post download links for the whole album? I need a good remastered version for my car. Thanks :)

I like when she tweeks a classic but it makes me miss the aggresive vocals of 90's pj

@mysoultheunderground Ahh now I understand what you mean! Yep, once an album is clipped there's little to virtually nothing you can do to fix them, which is a damned shame. I rarely listen to "10000 Days" so I hadn't realised it was clipped to hell... On the other hand, you've got me listening to "Undertow" again, which is a good thing lol

@zararity I can respect that. :) However, the clipping on 10,000 days is woeful but I guess that can't be fixed now.

@mysoultheunderground Hell no! I would never mess with Tool, what you hear is pretty much exactly what Tool want you to hear... The only ones I'd consider mucking with, cautiously would be "Undertow" and "Opiate"... :)

@IClots1 I know PJ wasn't overly happy with "Rid Of Me"... but I think song wise it's my favourite PJ album, it's a near masterpiece!
