A new 'Private Remaster'...

What a good album... Brutal, aggressive, abrasive are some words... but damn, it was mastered so quietly!

Yeah, dynamic range is a nice thing but the levels this album was originally mastered meant I rarely listened to it, especially when out and about because I couldn't get my iPod loud enough to drown out the whir and hubbub of the buses I'm usually on!

So here it is. It is anything but brickwalled. I HATE digital clipping, it's ruined so many albums I love... again, the opposite problem to what I was saying about the original "Rid Of Me" CD, but the same after-effect, music that I love but rarely want to listen to.

I had a careful look over the waveforms, decided what levels to work with and used as minimal compression possible to get the levels to a more suitable point. I can't hear any problems with digital clipping and I've already replaced the original CD with this one on my iPod!

Enjoy! And remember, buy the original, support your favourite bands and musicians!

+whatisdylar Thanks to you I've rediscovered Sonic Youth, I can't believe I've owned "Sister" for years and never really listened to it. I reckon it's even better than "Daydream Nation"! Odd sounding album, guitars and the like sound really good, the drums are recorded oddly, like you say very flat. Quite a toughie to 'fix', but I'm giving it a go... You might see it pop up on my YouTube if I can get it to sound a bit better, would be interested in your opinion.

Yeah, it's one of my favorite albums ever, but the production always seemed super flat and lacking.

"Sister"... I'm going to have to go and relisten to that album, it's been a while...

I'd like Sonic Youth's Sister to get redone this way.

You are one sensible man! Even though I own an iPod I've always wished someone else would step up with a better product to replace the capacity of my 160GB iPod Classic... ;)

Well, never had an iPod so never had to deal with that :P

I use Koss Porta Pros with an iPod Classic 160GB. The problem lies with the iPod Classic and it's built in volume limiting. I've been meaning to Rockbox it for a while and finally free it of all the Apple limitations!

Yeah I know that's annoying, I managed to found some Sony earphones with no such limit and it worked fine for me, but it was some years ago.

Whilst I agree (my aim on these remasters was preserve the wide dynamic range as closely as possible, and looking over screenshots of the waveforms I reckon there's not a huge loss in getting the amplitude up) I also found that especially in the EU where they have imposed a volume limit on many portable devices, it was a struggle to get the volume to overcome the wheels on a noisy bus! ;)

I think the original "quiet" master results in a much better sound quality, not to mention the wide dynamic range is quite important to appreciate most of the album (title track in primis).

Funny you should say post-"The Lion and The Cobra"... If you listen to "Troy" on the CD release, the vocals start to DISTORT ridiculously at certain points... totally ruined and they've never fixed it! I pieced together a much improved version using tracks from the "So Far... The Best Of" CD, but would still love to see an official remaster! Thanks for the suggestions, I haven't got around to listening to "The Beekeeper" yet...

Wow. I can think a lot of albums that would benefit from something like this. I'm especially thinking of Tori Amos's The Beekeeper, most of Sinead O'Connor's post- Lion and Cobra albums.
