Lyrics:

Mama planned it all

Said it's pretty in the Fall

And the flowers would be

Rosies and daisies

And she prayed nobody saw

The weight that I put on

The bride shouldn't be

4 months and 3 weeks

Daddies pride and joy

Is marrying some boy

And he looked afraid

The preacher turned he page

And I was wearing beige

Nowhere baptist church

Wrinkles in his shirt

No ones having a ball

At the reception hall

And we didn't take no honeymoon

With what we've got ourselves into

A quick I do

Then back home again

Daddies pride and joy

Was marrying some boy

Now everyone in this place

Knows I didn't wait

Cause I was wearing beige

I was wearing beige

What behaviour? Sex before marriage? How does that cause "generational poverty"? Whatever that is supposed to mean.

And you're okay with it? That's really stupid. "That's the way it is" is so pathetic. DO something about it. Educate people.

WHAT YOU DO NOT MENTION IS THE GENERATIONAL POVERTY THIS BEHAVIOUR CAUSES! TRUST ME ON THIS ONE WAITING IS WORTH IT'S WEIGHT IN GOLD THREE,FOUR GENERATIONS LATER.

You can tell who is from a small Southern town and who is not, just by reading the comments. The song is not saying that the judgement faced by the girl in the song is right, just that it is. In small towns, yes it is. It just is.

I know what the song is about. But that's exactly my point. This bullshit about being "pure" is just that, bullshit. Judging people for their personal lives. Who cares if you have sex before marriage? Big freaking deal. The idea that women should be virgins when they get married is an archaic, patriarchal principle designed by insecure, jealous men to keep control over women. It's all garbage and anyone who judges people by their number of sexual partners is a moron.

The girl in the song is already ashamed being four months pregnant. "We didn't take no honey moon with what we got ourselves into." She's not happily marrying a boy because she loves him. It's because she's with child. But because he is the father of her child, she is marrying him to please her conservative parents and fellow conservative townspeople. She figures since they're already gossiping about her, she might as well wear beige. They know she's not pure and she knows she's not.

Can I just ask though? Why is sex outside of marriage immoral? If it's between two people who love each other, why does it matter if they're legally married? Marriages are about love, not a piece of paper. I could go marry some dude right now, legally, but why does that make us "more" married than a loving couple that has been together for years but hasn't done it legally? I've just never quite understood the emphasis people put on the legal part of it. The love is what counts.

I don't know how to feel about this song. It's a beautiful tune. But it's kind of judgmental. Who really cares what colour your wear on your wedding day? Using colour to advertise one's virginal status on her wedding day just opens the floor up to judgment and further adds to the patriarchal ideal that women who have sex before marriage are worthless whores. "Damaged goods", as they say. Besides, it's better to be an unwed mother than to marry someone you don't really love just because.

I have listened to this song so many times. It's beautiful and just heartbreaking..... exactly the way a good country tune should be. Makes me cry. Reminds me of the stories of the classic country back in the day that I love so dearly. Those are the ones that make you cry...

well, my Mom wore yellow for similar reasons, and she's from Canada, so I don't know how "Southern" it is.
