9th track on Echoes

Lyrics:

Little by little the night turns around

Counting the leaves which tremble at dawn

Lotuses lean on each other in yearning

Under the eaves the swallow is resting

Set the controls for the heart of the sun

Over the mountain watching the watcher

Breaking the darkness

Waking the grapevine

one inch of love is one inch of shadow

Love is the shadow that ripens the wine

Set the controls for the heart of the sun

Witness the man who raves at the wall

Making the shape of his question to Heaven

Whether the sun will fall in the evening

Will he remember the lesson of giving

Set the controls for the heart of the sun

The first time I heard/ saw this was on TV when I was 8 years old in 1977. It was from the Abbey Mills pumping station session from 1968. I immediately decided that I wanted Ummagumma for Christmas in 1977 and I got it. That live version was the business! I saw Pink Floyd live at Pompeii at the cinema in February 1978 and it was magnificent! I didn't buy the studio album until 1983 and I didn't think it came up to the live performances and I still don't! Nevertheless, it's an important turning point for PF and it has its charm!

I do love it when someone posts a tune from a greatest hits album and then tells us what track it was ...It was the THIRD track on "A Saucerful of Secrets," Pink Floyd's second album ...
