Awesome, I've been looking for this, couldn't remember what it was called. They included this as part of a DSOM encore when I saw them in 77 in Phoenix. I don't recall hearing it when I saw them in 72, but I don't remember much about that show, my brother dragged me to it. I hated it. (gimmie a break, I was 12 still coming of the Archies in 72, I still thought 3 dog night was the coolest thing going then.) Then DOSM came out, and music was never the same again.

It really bothered me at some point in the 1990s, when Musician interviewed first Gilmour and then Waters. Waters said, "I never played anything, I wasn't interested in being a great player", but he was only saying that because, when they'd asked DG about the frettless bass on "Hey You", his repsonse was "Roger playing a fretless bass? Please!" That shit is just juvenile and unnecessary. I don't care who filed which lawsuit. David Gilmour was the real brat of the Floyd Wars.

Dave played few bass solo only on late albums, he played fretless bass on Hey you and on the intro of Pigs ( three different ones) they are really good but that is not the kind of playing of a true bass player. Roger played in a great way until Wish you were here, then he wanted to be " the director" rather then a player, still played well but was not interested, personally I love the bass of Echoes part two, every bootleg is simply great.

Not quite accurate. It was during the recording of Piper at the Gates of Dawn, that Syd & the boys were invited to visit them as they worked in the studio. John and Paul, at that time, were working on the (rather strange) outro for "Lovely Rita", and according to ... Andrew King? I think, or maybe Peter Jenner? ... the "vibes" in that room were just terrible as any of the Floyd sessions. In other words, nobody was having an especially nice day.

>other bands were so scripted until this time... - You know, being "scripted", that's hardly the worst thing in the world. Guys like Brian Wilson made fantastic, fabulous records like "Good Vibrations" or the Pet Sounds and SMiLE albums, using more or less the same studio session musicians. He definitely "scripted" his music. He told them what to play, and how to play it, which they did, and when every player had his individual part mastered, they made some TRULY AWESOME music!

I think it was the obvious thing to do, axing this little jam in favor of the synth piece. Have you listened to the studio version of this "travel sequence" (it's on the Immersion box set)? It's pretty terrible. It's made up of nothing but E minor and A major chords, exactly the same as "Breathe", so it sounds more like an extended ending to that song, instead of its own thing. The final "On the Run" was so much more unique.

I don't know why it is, but it seems the earlier the version of "Breathe", the more balls it has. I think it's Nick and Roger, as the rhythm section - they both seem to be tuned into a subtle "swing" feel. That slight swing in Nick's drumming, and Roger's cool little lead-style bass playing (considering Gilmour's assertion that he played about half the bass on the records, there sure are a lot of bootlegs with Roger playing GREAT bass) to me, these are hallmarks of "classic" Pink Floyd. Thanks!

Phreaker92, it was the other way around - the Beatles were down the hall while Syd and the boys were recording Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Interstellar Overdrive was a totally new phenomenon for them. Of course the Grateful Dead were pioneering the same sort of freeform madness (not to compare Jerry with Syd!) at the same time in San Francisco with Dark Star. Call it convergent evolution.

Actors are good liars, because they aren't being themselves. Musicians are creating an artistic reality using instruments and voice.

They are the to the music as the great master (Da Vinci, Michele Angelo Bernini) to art. The Pink Floyd Music are timeless master pieces.

OK but there is one thing we'll never understand : Why they decided that "on the run" in this rock version was not good enough for the album ??

@sillentdragon i think Beatles did the same thing . Just they a bit earlier! Btw : The Saucerful of secret album was inspired by Beatles' Sgt Pepper's . Pink Floyd guys always went to the room of Beatles and listen to them. Not sure , it was the saucerful album, but i think .. :)
