I'd say the advantages of playing it the way I showed it and the way privatetricker plays it, is that those inversions are probably the two most common min7 voicings in disco/funk. There's nothing wrong at all with the chord you play, but in my experience (twenty years playing funk) that voicing you play just isn't as common as the other two in funk vamps. Now, the chord privatetricker is playing, I wouldn't recommend playing so high up the neck. But it's a great funk chord in lower registers.

Sorry I meant "x-x-x-5-4-4". Thanks for the clarification, it was the higher inversion that wasn't sounding right to me compared to the original with the top note being a C. I'm trying to learn guitar at the moment, been playing keyboards for years. What would be the advantage to using x-x-10-8-9-x vs my simple top 3 strings version, and what would the shape be for that?

No,the verse groove is actually x-x-10-8-9-x. He's playing it right. (Fmin7). He's just playing a different inversion 10-x-10-10-10-x. And he's not clashing with the horn line because the sax's are an octave lower. I have the sheet music and the horn lines are actually transcribed for guitar. The main horn lick is Dorian and the lowest notes of the scale are played. Also, the chord you showed is wrong. Your chord is an Fminor. The actual chord is an Fminor7.

Also the verse groove is too high up the neck, more like x-x-x-5-6-4, you're clashing with the sax range.

That intro chord should be x-x-10-9-11-11. It's a C7#9.

@dtreeguy It's a lot more boring to pretend to be the guitarist in AWB! :)

Man, it must have been boring to be the guitarist in AWB!

@privettricker I agree, but the video focuses on the guitar, and when I first watched it, I was waiting for chord changes. I guess what I'm getting at is the video should have been an instructional instead of a playthrough. Also, this isn't a huge deal, and don't think I'm getting down on your videos - which are great. Just sharing my thoughts.

@daregularperson It's the groove that matters, not the number of chords. Tomorrow Never Knows only has one chord because it doesn't need any more than that. I think this one has just the right number!

There were too many chords on this one, I couldn't keep up. I counted four. Good playing though, although it would have been quite a dirge to watch the whole thing.
