Johnathan Demme dirigió en 1993, el drama Philadelphia sobre la vida de un abogado (Tom Hanks) que contrae el SIDA y es despedidio de su trabajo, entonces contrata a un abogado (Denzel Washington) para que lo defienda contra los perjuicios sobre el SIDA, y sobre el tabú de la homosexualidad. Los acompaña en la interpretación Antonio Banderas como la pareja de Tom Hanks.La banda sonora la compuso Howard Shore. Bruce Springsteen compuso "Streets of Philadelphia" para el film, ganado el Oscar a mejor canción y Neil Young también estuvo nominado a mejor canción por el tema "Philadelphia."
